What about a whip sword that uses lashing and swords depending on how close you are to the attacker? Or chain sword, whatever you wanna call it :P That'd be >phat<   :roll:

Make the name "tipped whip" and you'll have "iron tipped whips" instead of iron ones. Not a lot more meaningful though..

Since most of everything is made out of just one, solid material in DF, I would have to presume that the "steel whip" might be a steel handle, with a length of steel cord attached. Or just wire. I don't know how would dwarves go around making steel cords though...

You would be referring to swordchucks, I believe. The problem with those lies in the ease in which your own limbs can be chopped off.

I'm talking about the kind of sword you see on Dead or Alive, the one woman uses a segmented sword that can either be used as a sword or can be released and used like a bladed whip.
Now adding cutting your own limbs off when using exotic weapons and having a critical fail would make the game just a slight bit more interesting than it already is : P Though most of my adventures end with having my head bit off by a pack of lions or something or wrestling a bat man for 2 hours trying to figure out how to choke him out.
