How to enable the keyboard cursor

Dfhack requires a keyboard cursor for some of its features. I saw it pop up, so I know I can enable it somehow. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear by toggling "keyboard cursor enabled" in the game settings or running "toggle-kbd-cursor" in Dfhack. So how do I do this?

The keyboard cursor will show up when it is needed, try mining (m).
