Dwarves quit making charcoal

I have metal bars everywhere I was going to make stuff out of. I've tried enabling the furnace operator labor, and I've made everyone non-specialists. I think it may be because they are unhappy. They do other labors. What is going on? I'm on the latest version, unmodded.

I've just enabled wood burning. I still need to test this, but I think it will work. Thank you for your help.  :)
