Preparing armor & weapons in barracks equipment zones
« on: September 29, 2023, 06:51:51 am »

A suggestion in response to some terrible bugs i've experienced, (a multitude of corrupted raid armor, bolt and bin conflicts, to dwarves going shirtless because all of my armor is locked up, and phantom sutures urgh i've experienced it all) which felt like the way soldiers pick up items from bins and stockpiles

If a unit doesn't have a assigned barracks, they pick items up and equip them as normal, so that the embark caravan can still equip your starting 7 or early fortress in armor and weapons ad-hoc.

Once a barracks is assigned with individual weapon/armor storage or ammo & accessory storage, items that fit the criteria are instead moved into the barracks seperately by civilians with a 'Restock Barracks' job until the soldiers are active, rather than the soldier seeking them out and equipping themselves from stockpiles, and it creates a more static and permanent station for equipment, which will be removed from the barracks if inadequate, or the squad screen is asked to update.

From there, to try and circumvent the raid armor bug, each piece of furniture is assigned to 1 soldier and when they leave the map, the furniture case mentions "in transit" too, waiting for their return. And if they die onmap or offmap, it's cleared and restocked with the uniform fitting that squad.

This. Barracks even have a “store equipment” option but dwarves never seem to use it. They don’t sleep in the barrack beds either.

If you're so sure that you're gonna end up killing all of dwarven civilization, why not make a statue depicting 2147483647 dead dwarves, all of which are burning? Name it something good, like Deaddead the Dead Dead Dead-Dead of Dying. Just put it in the main hall or something, as a grim reminder that they're all gonna die.

I've noticed they do if they don't have a room to themselves with the same kind of thoughts of being inside a dormitory. Most behaviour does seem to be "if i already have something, barracks can be ignored" in terms of priority.

About bins particularly, bins are in a better place than they were before in which you don't have to vilify and destroy them all to get jobs done around the fortress (block bins are good, sorted pile bins are ok, still avoid metal bins unless they are sorted in their permanent place), but the annoying left-over behaviour of them being extremely posessive of objects remains. They can't transfer between items so even with my suggestion, bins are not recommended for armor, weapons, ammo or accessories.

You get into danger territory when 1 sorting of a bin mixes the contents. Recently i had a armor bin that was set in a 'all stockpile' and i've since made more space and time for dedicated piles which it won't relinquish. So i've been using trading to try and mill some of the contents back out again and filter off some of the FPS junk-rubbish, despite the weight restrictions on caravans when dealing with a lot of intermixed making it 2000z of weight for taking the entire bin, i can drain off, make offers and buy back the bits i actually want. Its laborious to say the least.

Bay12 really needs to fix the more "game breaking" bugs.
