Titles, and greetings based on titles.
« on: August 19, 2023, 09:55:47 am »

In fable 1 and 2, the hero can accumulate various titles, like ranger, liberator, assassin, piemaster.
I want people to know I beat that hill titan out back! And that I eat pies.

My suggestion is that more of the people you meet in a location should use your title.

Of course, this is also the opportunity to go into detail about titles. aka you can talk to the guy who will make you famous in order to spread your title.
(And pay money)

How he convinces a whole village to always use a specific title, the world may never know.

Imagine sharing an adventure mode save, and hearing stories about how a previous adventurer slew a bronze colossus.

The player can already spread various reputations and epithets, and even write their own when assuming an identity.
Government positions are another form of title, and I could imagine a legendary dwarven king having his herald rattle off the full royal stylings.

The greeting system is fairly bare-bones, but even having the character point out the adventurer's title when replying would do a lot to remind the player of history. Something like "Welcome, slayer of Theta Testpaddes. How may I be of service?" would not be out of place.
Units prone to flattery (high friendliness, low truth) would be quicker to point out heroic titles, even if the reputation is little more than a rumor. Perhaps the player could exercise their flattery skill by choosing to reply with the epithet should they know of that unit's past.

Conversely, characters with a low opinion (and low politeness) should prefer to call the adventurer by derogatory names. Talk to the wrong goblin in a bar and soon the whole town will call you a mud-sucking maggot every other sentence.
Nouns drawn from a new symbol list based on SUBORDINATE do well for general purposes, though the art of procedural insulting can most definitely be refined.

I think most NPCs reacting to the player appearance would be more realistic.
Sure, some may know your title and your deeds, but most will treat you different on how you dress, having a steed, coming with an entourage or displaying certain jewelery.

It would also enable sneaking into certain areas by dressing appropriate. Standing out / blending into a crowd, or gaining access to certain social circles.

It's just super hard to get specific clothes. For me it would be much harder to find some sort of specific cape than killing some megabeast. I wouldn't even be able to get steel weapons without legends viewer because my computer can't handle to enter dwarf fortresses due to the massive crowds.

For animal people it's not even doable at the moment.

I think the idea is nice actually, just that it needs to be added some more options how to get clothes and other stuff first.

I think it should depend on the Decorum, with more stratified and formal societies having plenty forms of salutations.
