So I found my first new cave, which deserves commendation unto itself (self-high-five!), and I am currently fighting a cave swallowman, so umm, yeah, see topic title.

I've just got attacked by giant cave swallow! Stunned me with the first hit.

EDIT: IT TORE MY HEAD! My adventurer defeated an ettin, but was slain by giant cave swallow! Horrible...

I was also killed by a giant cave swallow, it grappled my head with its beak after breaking my arm.

I had already killed a bunch of them too. With no injuries.

In case anyone was wondering, cave swallows are the birds that make nests out of their own spittle.  These are the nests that are used to make "bird's nest soup" in South China and other parts of Asia... the are a delicacy, and high quality ones are pretty price.  Imagine if you had one from a giant cave swallow! I wonder if Toady was watching "Bizarre Foods" on cable in between coding sessions?

I wonder if there are edible swallows' nests somewhere in the game?

*EDIT* Ooops, I was wrong... its cave swifts, not cave swallows that make spittle nests.  Oh well...

Nothing to do with cave swallows or swallowmen (which I assume to be the result of some awful bestiality or some such), but I died epically a couple games ago... during the exploration of a cave I ran into a series of Iron men (who's statues I also carried around, dropping for fights). The first two were no problem. The third broke my wrist, so I started leaving since I was using a greatsword. The fourth beat me up pretty bad before I killed it. I was almost free when I met a fourth... this one beat me up some before grappling my sword, tearing it from my grasp, and beheading me with it.

I don't know exactly what they are, I think they're like male harpies.

But it's rather calming to watch swallowmen flying just above an insanely deep chasm I have near my fortress. There's also fireflies, so it's like a dance party of lowercase Cs and multicolored dots.

Until one of them flies too close to an edge and is jumped by a pack of beak dogs.

Easy to kill hordes of them, but one can tore you to pieces in one lucky strike.
