[0.47.05] Where to put my traps?
« on: June 24, 2023, 09:11:19 am »

I want to better defend this entrance. Where should I put my traps? Outside, or inside? If inside, how to put them in a way that don't block access to trade depot?

There is this wiki article about making a caravan safe but trapped corridor though I'm not sure if you can turn yours into one.

Looking at the image, I think that the only part that can be trapped with simple* weapon/cage traps is the section between the depot entrance and the stairs. For the rest of the corridor, and assuming that the z-level above isn't used for anything, you might be able to use "cave in" traps using supports and either levers or pressure triggers.

* I'm not sure if retracted spikes/spears block caravan access, if not then you can just use those on the whole corridor and just keep them retracted when not in siege.

edit: It seems that, at least as far as the [D]epot access command is concerned, upright spikes/spears don't mess with caravan access. Use them.

Bring Kobold Kamp to LNP! graphics compatibility fix.

So the conclusion I'm getting here is that we use QSPs because dwarves can't pilot submarines.

I never even thought about upright spikes not blocking access when down, that's awesome. You could even build some walls straight out from your tunnel to give you a longer killing ground.

My normal approach would be cage traps in between the stairwell and depot access route. Then a drawbridge immediately at the stairwell for the option to seal myself in while still baiting a siege with the depot. But that's pretty vanilla, really I'm more excited about fields of upright spikes.

You can also exploit pathing when placing traps outside. Cage or weapon traps could go on the ground against the walls and corners, still leaving a 3 tile wide path going straight out. Enemies coming from either direction will prefer the shortest route over swinging wide, so they'll often go right around a corner and walk straight over them.

Not traps as such, but you've got room to put in an airlock system to your depot. Tunnel right from stairwell and down to depot, but install a drawbridge in between and keep it closed while the outside is open. Then you can close the outside when you open the inside. (Just remember to open up before they're ready to leave.)

Most of the traps should be in a backup corridor, which is three wide and fairly long.
You seal off the main entrance and open the back entrance to let in any dwarves trapped on the surface.

or you could just move the depot closer to the entrance and put the traps further up the corridor near it.
