Declining Happiness
« on: February 26, 2023, 04:43:36 pm »

Newish player.

My current fort is almost 5 years old, I'm relatively safe, have plenty and varied food and drink, smoothed and engraved bedrooms for everyone, a tavern, dining room, other generic meeting rooms and temples for all the major faiths. But the happiness of my dwarves continues to decline. When I look at the individual dwarves, under unmet needs, nearly all say 'Pray to X', but I have all the X god temples with engraved rooms, chests and instruments.

What am I doing wrong?

Thx

How often do you give the fortress a complete break from work to actually spend time in their tavern and temples?

Also, do you have a generic temple?

But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

Yes, I have the generic temple.

I didn't think I had to give them time off, I thought they did that on their own, with the hard working folks working more and the lazy ones less. How do you give them time off without screwing up all the que'd up work?

You can put the workshops on pause.
I find closing the front gate (and entrance to the caverns if you have them) and putting everything on pause works to get everyone into the taverns, temples and guildhalls to work on their needs and build up some happy memories with their friends and families. I usually give them a month in the winter.

There are other ways, some probably more effective. Mist generators for one. I just like watching my dwarves having fun.

Just like running a business in real life, you can't take someone's word for it when they tell you they love to be busy all of the time so you just keep giving them work until they drop dead.

Probably easiest to make a burrow over where you want everyone to hang out, add everyone to it, then pause the burrow when the festivities are over.

You're always going to get some grumpy citizens that just can't be pleased. Real problem dwarves can be exiled and that's usually the easiest way of solving the problem.

Military dwarves often need breaks from training to do something creative, but veterans can get grumpy from going off duty. It's a fine balancing act.

Some citizens occasionally want to wander, this can be satisfied by tell them to gather plants.

Usually in a big fort you won't have more than 10 super-grumpy dwarves, you can see what their specific unsatisfied needs are and solve them. Ignore the rest.

In 15 years of my fort playing normally, I've only had 2 dwarves that were driven to tantrum. One was a child who kept starting arguments every time he socialized. Completely unsaveable. The other is a soldier who received a bunch of injuries fighting cavern invaders. (I think he won't be a problem, but the fort's stuck just before a loyalty cascade.)

I gave them a month off and it helped, a little. I went from 15 on the positive side and 29 negative to 16+/22-.

For the super depressed dwarfette, I made her the leader of a new one person squad and sent her off to raze a substantial enemy.

The problem now is drinking, 45 dwarfs, including 8 children, are drinking about 1k every season, and that is with no innkeeeper.

Thanks for the help

 ???

45 dwarves should only drink 225 units of alcohol in one season…
