Cats and butchery
« on: August 08, 2006, 05:20:00 pm »

I've notice that the kittens do a great job killing the vermin in my fortress, but they also kill toads, fireflys, anything that is smaller. Are these small kills usible? The butcher won't take them.

How do I "go korean" on the stray horses, mules, dogs, and cats?

The small kills can't be used for anything currently, though at sooome point there was an alchemy arc or something.  For now, just make sure you have a refuse pile somewhere for the bodies to rot, where you don't mind a miasma or outdoors.

To butcher livestock, go to [z] then select animals.  There should be butcher instructions on the screen somewhere.  I don't think cats are selectable, because they aren't considered "yours".  Rather, they happen to live in your fortress, and they choose their own owners.  You can either train dogs as war/hunting dogs, eat them (I think), or put them up as available pets.  They'll be snatched up if you have a dwarf that likes that kind of animal.  You can also do this with the mule and the horse if you don't want to kill them.

Well, it looks like I won't be needing to "wok" the dogs. A miner tapped into the underground river, and the poor mule and horse just couldn't make it out in time. Thank Armok that most of the doors held. I noticed none of the cats were even in the mine at the time of the flood. Makes me wonder.
