(Steam) Elves not taking animal goods in new version?
« on: December 16, 2022, 06:06:59 pm »

So, been trying to do some trading with the elves, and trying to offer bone crafts to them. Apparently they don't accept those anymore? They are reacting to it as if I was offering them wood items.

Their ethics are opposed to animal trophies, and it's finally being enforced. They'll refuse anything with IMPLIES_ANIMAL_KILL.

Unfortunately this also includes woolly items as Bumber has told me elsewhere.

It doesn't seem to count prepared meals though, or at least it's likely that doesn't (not quite sure because can't actually check what the roasts in large clay pots are made of on the trade screen).

Saw someone post on Discord bug tracker where some fish roasts were rejected. Might only be if they're the main ingredient. Eggs (including feather tree eggs) are also prohibited, according to the RAWs.

With what exact words are they complaining?

If they said "Once a beautiful tree, and now? It is a rude bauble, fit only for your kind.", then it means they think the item is made of wood. Look closely at the bone crafts you were selling them - if you acquired them via trade, it's possible they had been decorated with wood, and Elves have always objected to that.

If they said "I see your low race still revels in death. That poor, gentle creature...", then it means the code for handling the KILL_ANIMAL ethic during trade has changed and JUSTIFIED_IF_SELF_DEFENSE isn't good enough anymore (which is how they behaved way back before Ethics were added to the game in version 0.27 or 0.28) and you tried to trade them something derived from dead animals (including meat/fish).

If they said "You truely despise life, don't you? I am beside myself with grief. Perhaps we will show you how they suffered.", then both of the above happened simultaneously.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

And, let's be fair, how many of your masterful capybara roasts were obtained through "self-defence" in previous versions. :)
I'd say 50.0x's blanket ban on animal products has it more right than previous versions did.

What does MAKE_TROPHY_ANIMAL apply to? Does changing that have some effect?

As far as I'm aware, MAKE_TROPHY_ANIMAL didn't do anything to trade behavior in version 0.47.05, but I don't know anything about how it works now.

Elves also refuse to take goods made from papyrus.

You sure the issue wasn't scroll rollers or book bindings?

I could see parchment being an issue, but papyrus seems odd (unless it's just treating it all as parchment right now.)
