(WOO! First post!)
I recently got bored and took a bowman adventurer into a Human town (can't remember the name)and began a massacre. However, there were a few complications in the process and I was forced to retire as a peasant in the same town. When I came back to the town later, all hell had quite literally broken loose! The adventurer I left was shootin' people up, a merchant took umbrage at this and sprained his knee. This is where my theory on what happened comes in. A nearby child came in and saw what happened. He saw the Merchant attack the adventurer. However my retired adventurer was a member of the town... so... he engaged the merchant, mangling his spine(!). Another child saw this, ran to the offending child and began punching him. The other child was annoyed by this and grabbed the attacker's leg in a joint lock, snapping it. meanwhile the adventurer saw all this and began spamming arrows at everything. Then the guard got involved. As did an axeman and a swordsman. The swordsman wound up with his eyes, ears, nose, and throat gone in his mangled head, and the guards basically all died bar one (I'll get to that later.)What happened to the axeman... Let's just not go there, OK? Then a diplomat got involved and wound up missing pretty much everything. The entire place collapsed into a riot fre for all. The only survivor was anyone asleep (Bout 20% of the town) and one guard, who with a broken arm and just a shield killed:

I want her in my party NOW!!
To sum up, the town is basically screwed.

Are you sure that the sleeping people aren't going to wake up and start fighting too?

From the sounds of it, the adventurer became that civ's enemy. He then retired as part of that civ... making that civ an enemy of itself?

I can't be too sure because a cow quite bluntly mooed me to death soon after.
EDIT: Oh, and the town I satrted in was at peace, and I was in there for a while. My theory is that the civ enemying itself
happened person by person, if you get the meaning.

definitely seems like its from an older version. i dont some of the details you've mentioned are possible in the new one(s) unless i've really missed out on something :-/

I think the whole retiring as a peasant in the same town when you are an enemy probably set two entity links on the adventurer, though that might have changed at some point, since I thought I cleared them now prior to any new link.  Perhaps retirement slipped through somehow.  Once a creature has two links, the civilians will become quite confused.  Anybody that attacks the adventurer would become a civ enemy, though the enemy state should only spread to those that attack you, since the new enemies would have their other link deleted.  Anyway, it's a straightforward fix.  Fun to test, even.
