Flow chart for the new labour system?
« on: December 11, 2022, 03:52:57 pm »

It appears that the new labour system could have the following decisions regarding whether a dwarf can do a job:
  • Is the labour in a "nobody does this" labour detail? If yes, the dwarf cannot do the job.
  • Is the labour in a "selected dwarves only" labour detail to which the dwarf is not assigned? If yes, the dwarf cannot do the job.
  • Is the job in a restricted workshop to which the dwarf is not assigned? If yes, the dwarf cannot do the job.
  • Is the job in a restricted workshop to which the dwarf is assigned? If yes, the dwarf can do the job.
  • Does the dwarf have the skill for the job? If yes, the dwarf can do the job. *
  • Is the labour in a "selected dwarves only" labour detail to which the dwarf is assigned? If yes, the dwarf can do the job.
  • Is the dwarf specialized? If yes, the dwarf cannot do the job.
  • Is the labour in an "all dwarves do this" labour detail? If yes, the dwarf can do the job.
  • Otherwise, the dwarf cannot do the job.
* Maybe this also requires that it's the dwarf's best skill? The tooltip has muddied the waters here by using the word "occupation". Not a good thing if it does have to be the best skill - progress in skill A shouldn't flip a job assignment decision for a job requiring skill B.

But I'm not sure if all of these decisions exist, or whether they're in that order. And there could be more that I've missed.

Can anyone confirm whether this order of decisions is accurate? A flow chart for the new labour system would be really useful for fixing situations where a job assignment decision doesn't go the way you expected.

Seconded ...

I cannot believe that, given the amount of new sales of this game, absolutely NOWHERE, NOBODY wants to know which labors exactly are included in the default work details?
"Planter" ... what is that supposed to mean? Just planting plants? Harvesting them? All the other "farming-related" labors too? ... No idea ...
"Fisherdwarve" ... incluldes cleaning, dissecting, hauling fish? ... No idea ...

Also, in the same vein as OP: Which job will take priority over other jobs? (flowchart)
E.g., with the plant gatherer job set to "everyone" by default, I noticed that even my designated woodcutter will rather collect plants for days, then to chop down a single tree ... Shouldn't specifically assigned jobs take priority over random "everybody does it" stuff? ... No idea ...

This is why I use custom work details for everything and have everyone on "only assigned do this." The defaults are useless imo.

The labours included in the default labour details are a related but separate issue that I brought up here, but agree 100%. This:

Game:   Here's a set of fishing related labours that you might want to assign a dwarf to!
Player: So, is that fishing only, or does it also include fish cleaning and fish dissection?
Game:   Not telling! You have to guess!

is not a good user experience, and a player would have to be crazy to use a labour detail for which the game won't tell them what labours are included.

They mean exactly what they meant in 0.47. Planters are the ones with the "planter" skill, which is planting and harvesting. Fisherdwarves have the "fishing" skill. I'm not sure where the confusion is, there. Orderlies I can understand being confused about, but the work details that are named 1 : 1 with existing skills should not be confusing.
