Perhaps we might give you some insight on how such a story might be indeed rewritten.

The ilk of my story is quintessentially oxen. Dependable, hard-working, everyone uses me to get much done and pull them out of danger. I typically do not benefit from any of my hard work, having tilled the fields for others in exchange for only enough to live. If there was another way, I would probably take it. But as of yet there is not, as to take any other way would cause everyone who depends on me to whither and die. And of ilk, that is how it's been for my ilk for generations - others place their burdens on us, then each one places their burdens on the next, until the rope ends with the last ox on the yoke. Which gets to be me; it is a fortunate thing that I am inherently stoic and a pillar of stability, in all respects. Yet I could not say I do not notice that I have managed to get this far in life having never been able to ever pursue or even choose what I wish to do, always having to do what I must do. That causes a feeling which is deeper than sadness or disappointment, and is a feeling I do not have words for, with the closest being regret at existence being full of such banal and pointless evil

The tougher you can make them, the freer you'll be. Now realistically i relate to being stuck with immovable objects; but unrealistically i'd go full subliminal messaging and social engineering to drill in the concepts of toughness, strength and self-sufficiency. At the very end of the day it's rarely a case of can't, but don't.

Like Diogenes I bark at the ankles of those around me until they are similarly well-put to face to the future, but alas, like a ship cleared of barnacles new people latch onto me, and some barnacles are much too established to remove at all

Grasshoppers are unironically a cool insect. It's basically just a mantis on a bad day.

It was the great lady Joni herself.

Different accompanying footage of her doing this version - Big Yellow Taxi (Painting with Words and Music). Defintiely my favourite version of this song particularly since it's 'live'. The video i linked in the previous post added a lot with the relentless imagery (and the pace of its delivery), imo.

More of the 'parking lot' here - from 1:20 to 2:50 for best impact.
