Rivers are dangerous!
« on: June 27, 2008, 03:27:12 pm »

Wandering the wilderness, my hardy Dwarf adventurer was eagerly searching for a path up the mountain.  He knew that the cave he was seeking was close.  It was just on the other side of that steep bank, if only he could climb up!

But Dwarves are not natural climbers, so he continued to search for another way up.

My dwarf came upon a small brook in his path.  Perhaps there was another way up on the other side of the brook?  He started the cross the brook, when I received the following message:

"You have been encased in ice."

Followed by,

"You are deceased."

Egads!  That's quick-freezing ice!  True, I had noticed that some parts of the brook were frozen just a little upstream.  But I didn't think it was *that* dangerous...  It's only ankle-deep, after all.

Yeah, that happens a lot. Water in many places freezes at night and melts by day in adventure mode.
The same thing happens if you try to sleep on a hunk of ice at night. It melts and you fall in and drown.

When fighting a pack of wolves, I dodged and ended up in a pit, along with the charging wolf. Got out for the sake of my speed, and next turn there was a new floor of ice and a very cold wolf.
Something really needs to be done about ice. At the moment it's like some kind of Pitch Black threat where everyone dies at sunset. Feel free to substitute that film reference with one without Vin Diesel.

When it comes to the dangers of rivers, I find nothing more frustrating than walking through a peaceful forest, coming to a river, stepping to the edge and instantly being DRAGGED UNDER BY A CARP! I HATE CARP!

I've never encountered problems with ice though, probably 'cos my adventurers always end up dead in the bottoms of caves (or carp infested rivers)

In my most recent adventures, I was playing a kobold and was sneaking around a human settlement trying to get better than copper equipment.  I was constantly getting messages about sturgeon eating people.  Eventually, I find the front gate of the human castle.  Turns out, on one side of that gate was a small pond.  The shores of that pond were completely covered by corpses in various states of dismemberment.  I decide to look in it to see how many fish could possibly have performed this atrocity.

One.

One sturgeon, with a name something like Afulwath the Fiery Stanch of Dreams or whatever, was swimming in that pond.  The floor of the pond was THICK with body parts that it had torn off of its victims (who all would flood past the pond while going between the inn and the keep).  There was not a single tile on the bottom that didn't have a cluster of limbs and a head plus many pages of human chunks.

Then, I dove in and killed the fish in two hits.  Water's dangerous, but some can take it  ;)

I'm pretty sure that the carps can't drag you in, there's no such a combat feature as "drag to". It's you auto-charging. Are you sure you had set the combat priorities to strike-only? Or maybe you dodged.

Also the name of the topic seemed funny to me.
Tell me, which type of DF landscape is NOT dangerous? :D

Serene areas are pretty safe. That is, until a unicorn decides to impale you.

On the subject of rivers, I had a marksdwarf get killed when trying to drink from a river once. No idea why he didn't just stand back and fill those damn fish full of bolts.

Of course, if the AI wasn't so suicidal, I think the game would lose a little of its charm. Where would we be without dwarves who rush into goblin sieges to grab bloody underwear, and bronze colossi who sidestep into lava?

Just take heart in knowing that once elephants were reduced to normal, carp and unicorns took it's place.

It's some kind of law in the DF universe that no matter what gets fixed, something equally insane will take it's place.

Case in Point: the Elves.
