How to force dwarves to marry/have kids?
« on: May 09, 2022, 10:26:27 am »

Hello folks,
I am thinking of starting a Family Fortress. The idea would be that the fortress is a family farm with a husband, a wife and children taking care of the animals. I'd tweek migration waves to get prospective husbands/wives for my kids as they get older and would give them their own homes, eventually making a city in which everyone is descended from the same family at one point or another. The general rules would be:

1) The initial seven dwarves can stay, two of them would marry and have the main house. The others would be considered temporary farmhands and would be expelled after we get the farm up and running.
2) Migrants only permitted as suitors for the family's kids. When they get married all the unrelated folk are expelled. (Until then they will be treated as temporary farmhands)
3) Migrants that cannot serve as suitors will be expelled from the start (too old, already married, etc).

But for this plan to work, I would need to guarantee, to the limits of what is possible, that the dwarves will get married. I dont really care how that will be done. Be it with gamey tricks or even with save file hacks. Do you guys know any way to guarantee or make very likely that specific dwarves will marry and have kids?

That's cheating, the legit way is emprisoning to-be couples togethe, wait and pray (attention they won't marry someone more than 10 years off their age)

Lol I'm going to try this method and if it fails I'll try the cheaty one because I think relationships are a bit broken still in the game.

This maximum-10-year-gap rule is pretty ridiculous for a species that lives up to 300 years. Will have to give myself some leeway here then and permit some migrant waves until I either get a couple or get people that are in the age range and aren't gay or assexual (if there was a way to edit that out of the dwarves I'd be happy because it really makes this type of fortress needlessly harder to make).

I would recommend getting them drunk, and seeing who fancies each other first with a traditional tavern setup + functional inkeeper, then try the 'traditional' lockup method on loose dwarves while they are still tipsy. If dwarves socialise themselves in a shared relaxed enviroment, with alcohol making them relatively open and truthful, they quickly find people they like & dislike in the latest versions.

Orientation tokens.

Its certainly a lot faster to mod dwarves towards complete heterosexuality if that's your objective to go forth and be fruitful, as the game doesn't carry the native tools to examine a dwarf's gender preferences without picking up DFHack which can examine it for you. Unfortunately in the state of the world, the perception that someone could look over your shoulder and see a dwarf's gender preference in plain text can be against the percieved view of the country's law on what citizens see or 'interact' with, creates a big percieved barrier to making gender-pref stat on a dwarf's innate personality sheet.

I will try the tavern idea, thanks mate! I heard though that taverns dont actually make dwarves interact in a social sense for some reaskn (might be an old version they were talking about) but I'll try it just in case.

And thanks for the Orientation token tip! It would be pretty frustrating if I worked hard to create a viable family, then all of them died but one and I find out he can't reproduce because of orientation lol It will also make it easier to expand the family and increase survivability.

I think this was changed a few versions back? I don't know what it is now, but it should be more forgiving.
Or at least, so I hope. I'm trying to run a gremlin fortress now and they live up to a thousand years.

Pretty sure the 10 years doesn't apply anymore.

This is what the wiki says:

Quote from: DF Wiki
the age difference must be max(10,min(age_1,age_2)/2), i.e. a maximum of 10 years if the younger dwarf is 20 years old or younger, or else half the age of the younger of the two dwarves (so a 100-year-old dwarf can marry someone 50 years older).

I don't think these rules necessarily apply to dwarves who are undead though. Necromancers, intelligent undead, zombies, etc.
