A question about milling seeds/nuts…
« on: March 02, 2022, 12:09:25 am »

Hi!  I’ve noticed that there’s no way to control what types of seeds or nuts are milled into paste.  Is there any way to mill seeds/nuts in such a way as to avoid running out of seeds to plant?  I need oil for soap…

You can use DFHack to write a script to do it, although it may or may not be complicated. You can also make your soap from tallow rather than oil.

Using a burrow is a quite easy way of controlling, which materials a workshop can access. Anything outside the burrow will not be used.

Ofcourse if all your seeds are stored inside bags in a single barrel, you would first have to sort them. Using dump and reclaim, and then set up individual seed stockpiles (without barrels)

Yes, you can use stockpile links or burrows to select where you take your seeds from, and thus determine which kind(s) of seeds to use, but I'm not aware of any certain method of splitting seeds of the same kind such that some end up outside and some inside the source stockpile/burrow.

Thanks, I’ve taken to only commanding seeds to be milled explicitly.  I was hoping for a way to setup a recurring order that would leave enough seeds for replanting.

- Set up a 2-tile non-barrelled seed stockpile for the oil-producing seed that you will produce.
- Remove that seed type from all other stockpiles.
- Build a screw press quern, linked to that stockpile, and set to ignore general work orders.
- Inside the screw press quern, set up a job order to "press mill 50 seeds" when "100 of those seeds are available".
