Bay12 Community Bizarre Alt-History Thread

101 AD, Classical Antiquity

The Earth is one of the many planets that teem with life. What sets Earth apart from the other planets, however, is the strange things that always occur on it. Many different outside galactic interests have periodically visited Earth from time-to-time, but all eventually leave, being unable to truly grasp at the dynamics of the unique planet.
As of now, Earth is dominated by a sapient native species called "Humans". The Humans are split up into many different civilizations, all of which vie for power. The greatest powers to exist at this moment are the Roman Empire under Emperor Trajan; and the Han Empire under Emperor He. Many other polities of different heights exist but shift and lull at the winds of change to the status quo.

The status quo, it seems, will only shift more in the coming times. Much stranger things are happening as of late, things that cannot even be explained via religious means or anything else...

Hey guys, this is my flimsy crack at doing something akin to the Bay12 Communal Worldbuilding Game by Lord_lemonpie and Strik3r, who then took over after them. However this time, we'll post-by-post create an Alt-History of Earth starting at 101 AD.

This game also heavily draws from Jojo (my favorite anime), but posters can implement other inspirations into the world as they wish. A few start set-pieces:

- Gods don't exist, but Godly or Eldritch Beings exist throughout Reality.

- Magic used to not exist on Earth, but at year 100, it suddenly began streaming into existence. Due to it just arriving, no one has discovered magic yet.

- Psionics also exist, but only Aliens species have discovered it thus far.

- Other sapient lifeforms other than Humans exist in the universe but have little interest in Earth as of now; except for maybe some independent science organizations cataloguing non-advanced lifeforms.

- The Stand Meteor is in a secret location and not in Greenland like usual Jojo canon.

- Some analogue to the Pillar Men exist but are hidden and inactive.

101 AD - Roman Emperor Trajan leads an offensive campaign into the Kingdom of Dacia, which Rome has come to see as a threat on its borders. After a series of raids and skirmishes from both sides, Trajan and his legions meet Dacian King Decebalus and his army at the Second Battle of Tapae

(I dunno how to solve that, but I guess I'll just auto for regions that have low activity. I guess that can just simulate how not everything is written in history.)

Events

Roman-Dacian War
Code: [Select]
Roman Empire: 1d20(14) + Superpower (+5) = 19

Kingdom of Dacia: 1d20(5) + Fortified Defenses (+3) = 8

For the years in precedence, the Kingdom of Dacia and the Roman Empire had fluctuating relations with one another. Some years were cordial-friendly, with extensive trading between the two polities; while some years were rocky and were met with various diplomatic incidents. The most troubling flareup was a war that was fought between the two nations, years ago. But another seemed to rise in the distance.

Independent Daci outlaws had been raids various Roman frontier settlements along the Roman-Dacian border. The raids were especially costly to the Romans, as those settlements were all developed for the sole purpose of utilizing the very fertile soil in the particular region Dacia is in. Outcries and petitions from both Roman merchants who specialized in trading with frontier settlements, and displaced Roman frontiersmen wanted a response from Rome against Dacia.

Emperor Trajan attempted multiple overtures to King Decebalus, but King Decebalus had brushed them off, citing he had no control over what free non-peasant Daci did outside the walls of his capital. Inbetween the official talks, tensions had kept rising between Dacia and Rome.

One day a diplomatic convoy returning to Rome from a recent round of talks in Dacia, was viciously attacked. The guards of the convoy received massive losses in the defense but managed to gain a victory against the undisciplined raiders.

Within days, many Legions were being marshalled under the orders of Empire Trajan. Rome was threatened too much by Dacia. A military response, Trajan surmised, was the only solution after all diplomatic options were exhausted. The Roman Senate easily accepted his motion for a War against Dacia.

Word of the forces being gathered reached the ears of King Decebalus from his information network in Rome. It would take the Legions a few months to start a campaign in-full. With that in acknowledgment King Decebalus began a massive fortification campaign of the capital, along with any nearby settlements and forts. The outlying areas could not possibly be attended to due to being too far to the Dacian capital.

The Roman Empire, deploying 3 Legions (15k Legionnaires), began their campaign; immediately capturing and securing many Dacian villages, towns, and forts. At times they were slowed by heavy skirmishing by Daci militiamen and Daci soldiers, but they kept progressing through or deployed their own counter-skirmish missions.

The first and final battle of the Roman-Daci war began at Tapae, the fort-town that guarded the Dacian capital. A brutal siege ensued that lasted for four days, until the main fort of Tapae transferred into Roman hands. Survivors of the Tapae siege kept skirmishing against the Legions, trying to slow their advance to the Dacian capital, but ultimately failed. Little resistance was met when the Legions marched into Sarmizegetusa.

Decebalus was subsequently deposed by the Roman Empire and was replaced by a Daci noble named Vemnas as King. Emperor Trajan decided against making Dacia a full roman province, since holding it while being on alert against Parthia, would be unfeasible. Dacia instead became a legal client state to Rome.

Alien Visitation|"The Enemy"

A small-sized carrier-class spaceship stealthily enters the atmosphere of Earth. The alien spaceship is landed in a secret location in the mountains, in North America.

These Aliens seem to be not only capable of shapeshifting but are capable of psionic abilities. For what their main purposes on Earth are, is completely unknown. But they seem not to be friends of humanity, as their scouts mercilessly clear out human villages settled at the base of their mountain forward operating base. Some survivors of these attacks come to other North America native villages and tell of these aliens. They are sparsely believed and thought of as crazy. Nobody knows the names of these Aliens.

They are simply The Enemy.

104 AD: Vemnas is hard to adapt to being King of Dacia. Beyond his few close supporters, most see Vemnas as illegitimate and consider the exiled Decebalus as the true King. His court is full of potential double-crossers and disgruntled still-supporters of Decebalus at every turn.

One day, Vemnas while doing a routine horse ride next to his favorite river with his retinue, became victim of an ambush by an unknown well-armed group. He and his men put up an exceptional fight, but one-by-one they all began to demise under the onslaught of the ambushers. Vemnas was the final to fall, after killing at least five of the ambushers; he was caught off guard and was shot in the throat with a crossbow bolt while in the midst of fighting.

His body was just left to rot next to the riverbed. Hours had passed.

Suddenly a rocky small object, hurtled toward the site of where Vemnas' men and Vemnas himself laid. It crashed violent, spouting up large gusts of dirt and ground debris up into the air. When the resulting fog subsided, a strange pure-white substance seeped out from the broken now cracked open rock. The substance only was still for a few minutes but began writhing and moving. It was.. alive?

The strange living-substance made its move toward the closest body it could sense: Vemnas.

As soon as it was within 3 meters of Vemnas' corpse, it the white substance suddenly stretched very fast, arcing straight into the nostrils of Vemnas. Minutes passed. Then Vemnas opened his eyes. Though, was it truly Vemnas?

Vemnas quickly made it back to Sarmizegetusa alone. A large proclamation against banditry in Dacia soon followed, with increased military supplies and training from Rome allowing the Dacian military to cover more ground. The court of Vemnas next, was uncannily one-by-one culled of all opponents to Vemnas. This was done by various means: blackmail, subtle discreditation, and at times, assassination.

King Vemnas completely changed from being meek and unversed in the political arena; to being fully controlled and unnaturally insightful to the constant ongoings in his Kingdom- and maybe even beyond.

New Rule

We can post within the same year, in an effort to not make things not seem too fast. The maximum events that can happen in one year, however, is 5 only. Anything over 5 will not be counted for that year (this is all not to clutter one single year with multiple actions).

105 AD- Roman Emperor Trajan, emboldened by his campaign into Dacia, seeks to expand Roman territory even further. He turns his attention to the Osorene, a desert kingdom currently in the midst of an Interregnum and lacking centralized leadership. The Kingdom is usually allied with the neighboring Parthians, but what’s the worst that can happen?

After the celebratory days of Triumph over the Dacian conclude, the order to march is issued to the legions once more

105.2 AD (cont): A Plague breaks out in Mons Cities, Asia.  Refugees are fleeing to nearby settlements.  They probably have the plague also.  For Nurgle!

A cult starts trying to contact Elder Beings in Japan.

(Internet-fu tells me that Osorene was an independent kingdom that sided with both Rome and Parthia depending on its needs. It wasn't vassalized as a Roman client state until 114 and didn't become a full Roman province until 214 IOTL<in our timeline> The Interregnum is also historically accurate until Abgar VII took power in 109 IOTL)

106 ad: a large amount of new Enemy (units? People? I don’t know what to call them.) land on earth.  Several months later, shocking news reaches the Enemy on earth.  The Imperator has died.  In a power struggle, the Enemy on earth split into different factions.  The first is called the new Imperatorium, and is ruled by the Kinu, an Great-Nephew of the deceased Imperator.  This faction keeps residence in North America and boots the other factions out.  The second is called the Hive, and is led by The Queen, an incredibly powerful telepath who can command each of her units at work once.  They live in Australia.  The third is the Hadrium, named after their leader, Hadrian, who took a human name after coming to earth.  They live in west Africa.  The fourth, and smallest, is led by the Bloated King.  It is forbidden by the Enemy to speak its name, but they live in Scandinavia and have … allied … with humans.
