Dwarf stuck in surgery for over a year
« on: February 17, 2022, 04:15:58 pm »

I have a poor undead hammerdwarf "bitter one" who ended up getting pretty battered from an attack. He was taken to the hospital, but has been stuck there long after everyone else was treated and released.
When I look at his health status its listed as "Heavy Bleeding" with several limbs/etc "torn apart" or "smashed" in red. treatment shows he needs surgery and the chief medical dwarf has the job to perform surgery but nothing ever happens. Eventually the doc gets too tired or thirsty and leaves, but comes back again later and just stands there not doing anything. I cant suspend/cancel or remove the worker from the job so he seems to be just doomed to just lay there doing nothing when he should be having fun with his hammer.

I've tried removing the table he was on but the poor sod is just lays on the floor. I've seen other posts suggesting to accidentally drop something on him but the hospital is below a finished guildhall and I'd rather not dig a hole in their pretty room. I also tried removing the hospital, and both doctor and patient left the room. When I re-created the hospital the patient went right back to a bed, was moved to a surgery table and then they just idled there again.

When I follow the surgeon, I see the job flip from Stop Bleeding to Surgery so I'm guessing that's part of the issue and maybe the undead hammerdwarf doesnt actually have any blood left to stop bleeding or something odd and undead-like.

Any fix or workaround for this? Otherwise I'll just move him to a quiet, out of the way hospital and let him live out an eternity of undeath.

Sounds like some sort of undead bug.... Interesting issue. You might want to log the bug in the bug logger.

Two things occur to me: First, have you tried checking if they have the equipment to help him out? Thread and fabric, perhaps a splint.... If they don't have the equipment they can't do anything about the problem.

Second: Have you tried swapping out the chief medical dwarf? Once you've chosen a new chief medical dwarf, if you hit "u", choose your new medical dwarf, and "l", you should be able to manipulate their jobs and make sure whoever you chose has their medical work turned on.

I don't think the nobility title (chief medical dorf) is the important thing, but rather the professions enabled. Thus, ensure the surgeon actually has the appropriate medial jobs enabled (I enable all of them on all dorfs to allow anyone to deal with emergencies. As they happen rarely, I don't have enough work for a dedicated dorf to gain any significant skill anyway. Otherwise, who's gonna heal the healer?). Note that your dorf might be have one job enabled, but not the next one, and so gets stalled.

Hospital is well stocked, and I have a few doctors available with medical skills. I dont think nobility has anything to do with it, but he's the dwarf that got stuck with the job.

If I remove him from the surgery role and clear/re-make the hospital some other poor sap goes there and gets stuck.

So yeah, I think it's probably something to do with bleeding out but not actually having blood.

Oh, I agree the title is usually meaningless, but I've seen problems where the chief medical dwarf doesn't have any medical professions turned on at all, and everyone sort of... doesn't do much medically as a result. And if it was that specific dwarf who was chief medical dwarf who was buggy, it at least rules out other problems. But yeah, looks like an undead issue to me.
