Dwarves changing their preferences
« on: December 05, 2021, 10:31:45 pm »

The way this would work is that if a dwarf were to have a positive/negative experience with something, their preferences for that thing would change.  Some examples:

  • A dwarf who witnesses the close death of a friend by a bear would gain a detestitude of bears.
  • A military dwarf assigned a bismuth-bronze weapon would slowly gain a preference for bismuth bronze.
  • A dwarf that was forced to use a banana wood spear to beat an enemy would gain a preference or detestitude for banana wood, depending on their feelings on death.
  • A dwarf whose lover has a preference for amber opal would slowly gain a preference for amber opal.

There's probably some other ways to incorporate this, too.

A dwarf could simply lose a preference too rather than come to detest a thing.

Facets could play a roll in this:
  • Higher HATE_PROPENSITY makes it more likely a dwarf comes to detest something.
  • ANGER_PROPENSITY could be similar to HATE_PROPENSITY.
  • CLOSEMINDED dwarves less likely to change.
  • CURIOUS dwarves are more likely to be influenced by preferences of friends/lovers.
  • TOLERANT could work like a milder CURIOUS
  • SWAYED_BY_EMOTIONS is a rough parallel for empathy and could make it more likely to be influenced by preferences of friends/lovers.
  • DISDAIN_ADVICE is a bit of a stretch, but could make someone more or less likely to try the things friends/lovers prefer and suggest.
  • Stubborn dwarves with high PERSEVERANCE might be influenced less by friends/lovers.
  • ENVY_PROPENSITY might lead a dwarf to prefer or detest something another dwarf has.
  • DISCORD might lead a dwarf to dislike what others prefer.
Not really in line with your positive/negative experience, but simple exposure could change things. This would be similar to eating a new food, or getting too much of something you used to love.

As of right now, Dwarves never hate "things" or even animals in general - they only hate Vermin, so adding general negative preferences would presumably need to happen first.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I do like the idea of facets playing a role in this.
