what could have possibly went wrong ?

I only died to a demon after I threw my shield at him...next fireball actually hit me.

Deon: when you pick up something and your hands are full, you put it in your backpack. Remove it from your backpack and you'll be holding it in your hand. Repeat.

This bug isn't fixed yet, so it is still impossible to block a fireball.  You can block fire breath though.

So does holding 40 shields actually increase your blocking ability?

But, I assume, make you slower (more shit to carry)?

Hmm... As I reviewed my game log, it turns out demons can shoot both fireballs and firebreath. And it really was impossible to block fireballs.

I checked by going with an adventurer to a magma pit and fighting fire imps.
You can block fire balls.
Or they can both breath fire and launch fire balls, in which case I don't know.
BUT they seem to use fireballs at long range and breath fire in melee.
So next time just stick to them.

Can't block the BALLS, no.  Can block BREATH fine.

I'd suggest training wrestling and getting yourself capable of dodging them, as I suspect (read: hope) you can dodge them..
