While the surname of dwarves is translated to English on an individual unit's viewing screen, showing both the original and translated name:

In most places (generally long lists) only the dwarven version of the surname is shown (and even for the spouse name in the above screenshot), which makes it a bit hard to remember and recognize the names when looking at lists of dwarves (since y'know, we're not all fluent in dwarven, and so their surnames are unfamiliar):

And apparently at the moment, legends mode shows the translated name only, which makes for some confusion due to being inconsistent with the other modes.

So it would be nice to add options somewhere (probably in some settings menu somewhere) to make the translated surnames be used in menus where only the dwarven one is shown (like the above trade screen and "citizen list" screen), and vice versa when the option is turned off; so you'd have "use dwarven names" by default (as it is now) and "use English names", though in screens where both names are shown already, nothing would be changed (it wouldn't swap the names around or anything).

Similar but separate options could exist for elvish, human and goblin names (so you can keep them untranslated if you want), and other than just surnames, there could be options for other things such as artifacts, fortress names (like in that trade screen above), and epithets/titles; generally, anything that gets put in lists/shown often in only 1 language should be translatable, ideally separately to others (plenty of people use dwarves names now, but basically everybody uses the English Fort name for example).

Translating the first name is most likely unnecessary, as they are shorter and easier to remember (particularly if paired with an English surname).

Usually I recognize dwarves by the dwarven name, and I get confused instead when their translated name shows up, in legends and in warfare. I definitely agree that the inconsistency is a problem. And I like the idea of a user option as some people might prefer to remember the names one way or the other. The only other idea I will tack on is that it might be nice to have the other name (whichever is not enabled by the user) pop up in a tool tip when you mouse over any name. In other words, if you have "show names in native language" enabled then the tool tip would show you the translation.

Yeah, whichever option is chosen, it should definitely be consistent everywhere (of course, except where both names are shown, since no change is needed there).

A hover tooltip for the option you didn't choose is a good idea. EDIT: but that too should be an option possibly; it may get annoying getting tooltips when hovering over names all the time.
