Adding giantkin to your fortress?

Has there ever been any talk of giants, ettins, cyclopses or the like being friends with dwarfs?

I don't think it is possible in the game as is, but it would be very interesting to strike up a deal with, say, a giant, and have it guard your fortress in exchange for food and drink.

It ought to be possible to make civilizations of giants through raw modding. However, they'd end up as giant dwarves, humans, elves, or goblins (or possibly kobolds), as non dwarven civs aren't currently fleshed out. You'd probably have to make them "normal" creatures rather than semi megabeasts as well, or you'll probably get conflicts with that tag.

If you add in giant civs that aren't inherently evil you ought to be able to get some giant visitors that may petition for residence (and if they're evil they may well come as naturalized members of other civs, as well as spies in performance troupes).

I think you are mixing up some things :
To get giant dwarves /elves /kobolds... You would need to add new creature with the giant "creature variations"
To make giant civilization you need to create a new civilization (as they are already intelligent) and it "fleshed outness" will only depend on the raws (as almost nothing is hard-coded in dwarf fortress)
But to have only a few of them in your fort the easiest way would be to add individual controlable (making them adventure capable) and just retire some advanturers to your fort.
Semi megabeast won't interfere too much, but building destroyer tag might be annoying...

1. Find them in adv mode, with your expedition leader adventurer
2. Give them the title
3. Get them to show up at fortress (they're still hostile at this point).
4. Remove the expedition leader position, retire-unretire and hope they get military commander position.
5. Send them on 1 quick raid to unlock labors and disable hostility.

Other way might be to find one that has been granted religious position and imprisoned, and then rescue them with your dwarves.
