It sounds like there is no workaround, other than to avoid it and give up the potential extra dwarf happiness for higher value clothes.  Thank you.

And also give up the potential dorf happiness from flour-based foods. Up to you. Me, I like having flour around.

i dont think dwarves care about value or color, just the base quality. so masterwork clothes made from standard quality cloth is just as good as any other for the be extravagant need or "put on a splendid item" thought

For clarity: The stockpile that gives to your mill/quern needs to only have empty bags and dimple cups(/other dye producing plants)

But I wish that the mill/quern had a choice to "make flour" or "make dye" option.

I hadn't thought of flour meals helping.  I suppose they'd increase the value of the meal just as dye increases the value of the clothes.

Perhaps I'm getting incorrect information.

Not sure where this information came from, but I always thought they only cared about total quality. So, ordinary clothes made from masterwork dyed cloth, masterwork clothes made from ordinary cloth and masterwork clothes made from masterwork died cloth are all equivalent for happy thoughts. Can anybody link to someone doing science on this?

Dorfs can have preferences for particular flours just as they can have preferences for other derived products such as cheese. Thus, if a dorf has a preference for a flour that's in their list of preferences, that meal satisfies the food need. My understanding of the added food need satisfaction was that it was governed by the quality level of the food, not the value (and that clothing worked the same as far as satisfaction goes, but also that dorfs go for the most expensive piece of clothing/armor available even though that doesn't have any in-game effect on satisfaction).

Well, nuts.  I was hoping to earn extra happiness where I could.  I guess skipping the extra steps makes things easier, at least.

If you want to avoid stockpile links, there's dfhack's gui/job-material (Alt-A defeault hotkey), making the job repeating and then using gui/workflow (Alt-W) to keep a stock of dye of your choosing, provided you have the resources for it.

I just make a food stockpile that only accepts dye producting veggies and put it around the quern that is to be making dye. Since it's closest the dwarf grabs the dye making plants usually.

Also an empty bag stockpile nearby to save some walking.

I figure if I'm making the cloth to sew images on all the junk that makes it's way to my fortress I might as well dye the cloth too if I can spare a partydwarf.

I also like digging up clay to make all their clothes and furniture menace with spikes and whatnot for basically free.

I'll have to double check, but I thought making dye and not flour was as simple as just linking a dimple cup stockpile and a bag stockpile to the millstone/quern and then ordering the task on repeat.  I haven't made dyes in the latest version though, so some aspect of that process may have changed.
