Forgive me if this has been suggested, but I haven't seen it.

To prevent military dwarves from constantly seeking out the latest, higher quality armor or weapon... have a "freeze current uniform" toggle option in the military screen.  This would turn off whatever game routine(s) that cause them to upgrade their equipment, which we all know results in dwarves running around half naked as better quality armor (etc) is produced.

Toggle it back off and they do what they normally do now.



If anyone has the urge to cite other threads where this discussion has been made before, I'm ready to be stomped into the dust.

Rather than "freezing", most of what players want is "duplicate", however.

This is because there is a way to stop dwarves from grabbing new stuff every time a new axe is forged, and that's to use specific equipment in uniforms.  If you explicitly specify that they're supposed to wear the +<<=pig tail cloak=>>+, then that's what they'll wear, and they won't go hunting for new cloaks.

The problem with this, of course, is that it's horribly micromanagement-heavy... but then, welcome to Dwarf Fortress.  Pick one [ ] doing things right, or [ ] doing things user-friendly.

Oh heck yeah... I've already been down the road of assigning every piece of equipment to each dorf. 
The end result is wonderful, but the pain of getting there & maintaining it is a bit much!

Hence my OP suggestion.
