Confusion about Trading and Settling Debt in Adventurer Mode
« on: April 15, 2021, 02:53:59 pm »

Hey, I've been playing Adventurer mode for quite a bit, but I never got into the trading aspect in terms of currency. Now, I know that in the trading tab it shows near the top left how much I owe someone.

The situation is that I have coins belonging to the civ (and city for that matter) that I'm currently in. However, when I try to settle debt (using "a/o- Settle Debt/Offer Currency") and trade the apparent need in terms of value, the value that I owe doesn't go down or up, but stays the same.

The same thing came up to me when selling things. When trading with a merchant, I gave him items (coins from the same civ) that equal the value that I owe to the other guy mentioned earlier in this post. The game then says that the merchant owes me currency, but doesn't give me anything.

What gives? Is it bugged, or am I doing something wrong?

[disclaimer level: haven't played adventure mode in a few weeks, don't remember what the screens look like, and don't have a df install handy at the moment]

your currency needs to match the civ of the person you're trading with, which is very often different from the city or civ they're nominally in, which is a big part of what makes the whole coins-as-currency such a crapshoot.  they're also often carrying coins they don't even recognise themselves...

if you can see the coins they're carrying in the left side of the trade screen, along with all their other objects, that means their own coins are in a currency they don't recognise(!).  they'll happily trade these to you as normal objects with a value of 1, regardless of their face value....  if you don't see coins-as-ordinary-objects in their trade list, that means that whatever coins they're carrying are coins they recognise as currency.  in which case you can see what coins they're carrying by [l]ooking at them outside the trade/exchange goods window to learn what currency they accept

but, when you use the [a]sk/[ o]ffer currency keys it will automatically use the correct currency, if you have a mutually agreeable one.  if you don't have a mutually agreeable one, the maximum value you can ask or offer will be zero; if you do have a mutually agreeable currency, then the maximums will be your respective holdings in that currency.  you'll need to type in how much you want to ask or offer, it's not automatic... if you didn't type in an amount to offer, then you don't have the right currency and haven't actually ask/offered anything

The problem is that I do have the mutually agreed on currency to trade, and I do
  • offer to settle debt the equal amount, it's just that the tavern keeper won't accept the currency I have to offer him.

The same goes with the merchant who owes me currency. If he didn't owe me currency I would have gained it already, and when I ask for it he tells me to trade with him.

However, I have found out how to settle the debt without the use of currency, and that's to offer to settle the debt using items, since the coins don't show up. Apparently the merchant doesn't owe me anything anymore.

I haven't played adventure mode in a while, and I usualyl die pretty quick due to starting as a peasant, but in one of my sccuessful games quite a while ago I'm pretty sure I  remember having to sell one civ's coins to another civ's merchant like a normal item to get their coins to use normally. It also helped reduce how many heavy coins I was carrying because the exchange rate was pretty bad.

That was a fun game. I had my leg bitten off by my first dragon and crawled away to hide in a corner while my bar drunks and soldier recruit killed it somehow. I practiced crutch walking and swimming after that, and my next dragon I killed by bonking it on the head with my crutch. This time I hid in the corner first (I even laid down like last time) and after the dragon was tired from maiming and burning bar drunks I got free bonks in.
