Dwarves are mysteriously dropping wheelbarrows
« on: March 29, 2021, 02:49:44 am »

it then causes the original hauling job to be done without the wheelbarrow, and an additional hauling job for the wheelbarrow to be hauled back to the assigned stockpile

i'm not sure what's causing it in my fort but it's making hauling stone and cages loaded with undead cavern creatures to collection near the slaughter arena a pain.

i use a central ramp system instead of stairs, i did have hatches over portions of it before in case something bad got into it but i since removed it. I suspect the wheelbarrows were going onto the hatch and using them as floors, but then another dwarf opening it from below would cause it to be dropped.

but removing the hatches didn't stop the issue from happening. I replaced the hatch system with anti-building destroyer doors that are placed directly on a floor tile over a ramp, but i don't see how this could cause wheelbarrows to be dropped.

i searched on the forums but didn't manage to find topic titles related to wheelbarrows. can someone tell me what's causing this if they ran into it before? my fort uses mainly mass wheelbarrows to haul heavy things instead of a minecart system, for simplicity sake

The cause is an interruption to the haul by wheelbarrow job.  The cause of those interruptions are many and varied, but the most notable/controllable for me are the interruptions by higher priority jobs - harvesting plants, placing minecarts, and hauling trade good to the depot.  These can be managed by specialising dwarfen hauling tasks - for example I use the 'only farmers harvest' work order and then turn off the stone/ore//wood hauling jobs for my farmers, only place minecarts when I have multiple idle dwarfs and temporarily turn off other hauling for dwarfs hauling to the trade depot.  Other interruptions are less manageable - running from hostiles or bringing water to thirsty dwarfs, for example.

If I happen to notice quickly enough sometimes I will find the item that was to be hauled (not the wheelbarrow) and briefly forbid it, leading to the manual hauling being canceled.  Very useful if it is a piece of gold ore one layer above the magma sea, for example (but that level of micro is not for everyone).

As it stands it is a poorly designed game mechanic.

Definitely an interruption issue. The interruptions can be varied, but I've seen water be an issue. If the haulers are going through a dorfwash, a footbath, or something similar, they sometimes have the wheelbarrow float for a moment, or something, because they drop their wheelbarrow and go do something else. Also, they'll cancel if hit by a wave, if near the ocean.

Could it be burrows? Most hauling jobs don't need the burrow to be contigious through the whole trip, but wheelbarrowed ones do.

@dwarfish
Whether the job interruption problem is due to enemies, moving water, or burrows, you should take a moment to check your Stocks screen and expand the tools category to look inside the wheelbarrows. If you have had many job cancels, there might be many stones "stuck" in the wheelbarrows that need to be flagged for dumping to get them out. Wheelbarrows can hold maybe 5 stones and then they are useless.

thanks guys, it was indeed a cancellation problem. i noticed a stonehauler dropping a wheelbarrow while almost at the destination to walk 300 tiles to the surface to harvest plants. Managed to fix the issue by disabling stonehauling at vital times (such as military shift change near end of the month and seasons where i enable planting). I dont like to customize hauling but this macro management strategy works
