Chutes and smoothed slopes

Chutes currently exist in the game. However, you to fiddle around with dumping and unforbidding items and chutes can only go straight downwards. My idea is that you would be able to smooth slopes in the designation menu. Any item/liquid/creature that ends up on a smoothed slope will immediately slide off onto any empty adjacent tile. This would allow for things like funneling waste through chutes thought the fortress into one central garbage heap, and dropping goblins down twisting slides straight into the worlds core. Unless they have a high climbing skill, creatures would not be able to climb up smooth ramps. My other suggestion would be a chute zone which you would place over a chute would function exactly like a stockpile with things like links and all that except dwarfs will just chuck things down the chute. You should also be able to set it in the chute zone menu so that dwarfs can use the chute as a slide for traveling. Maybe they could even get a happy thought from being exhilarated if they like excitement.

There should also be a hopper you can build that allows you to prevent items and creatures larger than a selected size from passing through, allowing you to sort them.

That sounds like the sort of thing you use a minecart and/or pressure plates to do...

An advanced form of (floor-)grate emplacement/installation?

But it should be coupled with a better Sizing system, rather than some single dimension of size. Spears could be pushed (intact) through a grill that a lettuce couldn't be. (Actually, can't find a vegetable with an actual [SIZE] value, either.) While pages intended for bookbinding/etc should be passable through bars/fortifications with ease, but might not handily fall through the same gap laid horizontally (and might then impede further items' progress in doing so, however much they originally could).

You've got to get them into the minecarts first, as well as filter the contents on the way in or out of the cart. If you're going uphill or horizontally you need a cart. A chute is simpler otherwise.

Sorry, I wasn't clear.  I mean, having a hopper to sort things coming out of carts directly instead of having to rely upon elaborate and bulky pressure plate systems would be a useful feature for minecarts as well as just chutes.
