Mining Crypto while Playing
« on: March 28, 2021, 03:55:53 pm »

Hey everyone,

So I would like to mine crypto with my GPU while playing on the CPU and just wanted to verify that the GPU isn't used at all during gameplay?  I know its a single threaded game that uses the CPU but I'm not an expert on how the game works and have been away awhile.

Thank you in advance for your response.

Depends on print mode, I think. Text mode wont, but the openGL-based do (This includes STANDARD & TWBT, notably). Tilesets like Meph and Vettlingr can actually hit the limits of GPU memory with how big their spritesheets are.

You may also have heating concerns, though.

To my knowledge, the 2D print mode is entirely CPU-driven, and you can have a tileset at the same time (though no TWBT). You don't even need OpenGL or a GPU at that point. I heard that in 2D, the graphics rendering takes up its own thread (making DF a multithreaded game in the most technical sense), but I need someone to back up that claim.
