Ever melted a cage?
« on: November 30, 2007, 05:47:00 am »

I've just seen the strangest item yet.

quote:

molten Bronzelaced with goblin blood and fire imp goo

This is a molten bronzelaced with goblin blood and fire imp goo

I had a captive goblin thief in a bronze cage.  I decided to sacrifice him to the volcano gods.  When the magma made contact with the cage, this is what resulted.  The fire imp goo must have splattered onto the cage from a conflict that occurred with one nearby earlier.

I wonder what this item would be if it cooled down.  Maybe I could stud an item with 'bronzelaced with goblin blood and fire imp goo'.

Nah it's much more fun to put them on a platform somewhere in the caldera and see for how long they can fight off the imps.

Cages are actually a decent way to import metals you lack.  Each one (when empty) costs only 10x (metal value) and can be melted down for one bar.  Many maps lack either zinc or tin; startup purchases of cages is one way to ensure supplies.

Of course since you can buy metal bars at startup and ask for them in trade, buying cages is less effective a method of obtaining such metals.  ;)

How exactly do you take something out of a cage, anyway?

Actually, I don't think you can take metal bars along for the trip unless you edit  around.  Unless I missed something...

It would be really cool to make something out of metal that was laced with blood and a little goo.  A fine sword, for example...

Better yet (a friend of mine would be ecstatic if this were implemented), give the option for a smith to fill up his water bucket with blood, so that the blade becomes permanently bloody during the smithing process.

Yes, you can bring metal bars. You can also bring raw ore, flux, and coal.

Hit b,j to build the cage, select the cage with q, then hit 'a' to get into the 'assign' menu and deselect the creature in it.
