A farm plot will be red when you try to place it if you attempt to place it:

  • Outside of the cave.  You can build an open mouthed cave and farm in it, so long as the farm plots are entirely to the right of the original cliff face.
  • On dry land.  You must use either floodgates or seasonal floods to get muddy stone floors to build plots on.  Frequently walked upon mud can become "trampled dirt" and it will no longer support seeds unless reflooded.
  • Out of season.  As one respondent noted, you can't make farm plots in winter
  • Over any other building, including a stockpile.

You might check
the wiki article
on the subject.  Sadly, it is lacking in illustrative images.

Initially, I made the mistake of assuming all outside ground was perfectly fine for building plots.  No sir.  This ain't no Harvest Moon.  Dwarves plant inside, where the dangerous sun can't damage their beautifully irridescent, night-blue glow leaves.

What?  You don't see in ultraviolet?  Humans.

If Dwarves would have been able to see in ultraviolet, then they would probably have a name for that "color".
And no, not ishëmgeget

But what do I know?
Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.

"I thought it was the size of the others!" said Vanon. "I guess it was just standing further away!"

Nothing stopping you from modding them in! Unfortunately, they are going to be pitch black to your human eyes, so it may be hard for you to see the cloth against the black background.

(Hmm. Dwarf Ninjas?)
