Finding magma
« on: November 04, 2020, 12:54:18 am »

So....

My miners have hit semi-molten rock.  On the way they’ve hit the first and second caverns, but missed the third one and the magma sea.

What’s the best way to go about finding magma?

go up about ten z-levels from where you hit semi-molton rock, dig across maybe 15-20 tiles, then dig down again.  rinse repeat until you find the good stuff

My exploration technique is to dig about 10 tile horizontally in some direction from two levels beneath the bottom of cavern 2 and then dig straight down. If hitting the third cavern, I'd do the same but below the third cavern. By digging two levels below a cavern you won't get log holes in your tunnels when cutting trees in the caverns later. However, the standard parameters is a single Z level between caverns (I've changed that to two), so you can hit the top of the third cavern that way, and similarly encounter "hot rock" heated by magma at the same level below the third cavern (I've set the distance there to three to allow for horizontal digging that won't be interrupted by either wet warnings from a cavern lake above and hot warnings from magma below).

I usually dig down 5-ish levels, over 5-10 squares, down 5 more, etc. 3x1 up/down staircase, so it would be a 3x5 or 3x10 hallway. It makes it a lot tougher to accidentally miss things, and you might find ore or gems.

Sometimes magma is directly below a water-filled third cavern, and you can see the warm stone by using the 'd'esignate menu.

Ok...

After a concerted effort, I finally found the 3rd cavern and began looking for magma under it.

While digging downward, my miners found "warm stone" (not "semi-molten rock", but "warm stone").

What do I do now?

if the "warm stone" is next to them (horizontally), do not dig it out. instead, go up a layer or two until there's no warm stone, dig across a few tiles, then dig up-down stairs down behind where the warm stone was

if it's the ground below them, just dig an up-down stair into it

Interestingly, finding magma is the one and only problem that cannot be solved by magma.
