Leave No Dwarf Behind

(Note, I probably will edit and add to this)

It is often surmised that the job of hunter is cursed in Sakzuledos. They have evidence for this superstition, for of the two that have claimed the title of hunter, none have survived.

Erith Unalber was hunting on the southern border of Sakzuledos in early summer 1052. He was probably out chasing mountain goat or marmot. Fishing was slow going and plump helmet were being eaten as fast as they could be harvested.

In the south there was a large lake, within dwelt monstrous creatures. Chief among them was Ushulbubnus, a cave crocodile. Erith made the mistake (which all hunters inevitably do) of coming near the lake. He was dispatched by the lizard and frog men, having both arms ripped off him. He didn't stand a chance.

10 Dwarves from within the fortress imediatly sallied forth to retrieve Erith and his belongings. They were repelled by hostile forces and one dwarf, Dastot Gusilaval, sustained an injury to her left foot whilst fleeing from a lizardman.

A 4 man squad was hastily assembled, consisting of two fireteams. One for close combat and the other for ranged combat to cover them. They were sent to the area to provide security for the recovery effort. The body of the hunter and his effects were extracted but the squad stayed behind to mop up remaining resistance. Ushulbubnus appeared from the lake. Iden Mosusrungak, while mainly trained in hand to hand combat was a swordsdwarf that day. He took Ushulbubnus on single handedly and cut him in half. No one knows for sure how, but he ended up in the lake along with the now dead Ushulbubnus and himself died, along with wounded frog and lizardmen. Iden's sacrifice is not forgotten in Sakzuledos. While his body cannot be recovered (along with his valuable armor and weapon) he still holds an honorary place in the Tomb of Warriors.

An effort is underway to drain the lake where he lay and recover his bones for proper burial and to ensure that the monster never harm Sakzuledos again.

always bring a miner with you when fighting near a body of water. draft him and station him near, but not near the actual fighting. undraft and designate ramps to be carved as soon as posible, whethter there is someone in the water already or not.

The lake was successfully drained and his body and effects were recovered. All remaining creatures were slaugthered with ease, especially considering the ones at the bottom were injured and one was slipping in and out of consciousness and there were no injuries or deaths sustained in the hostilities. One miner drowned during the draining process, most likely due to his own incompetence.

Now I have a big drained pit with rotting creatures in it. Hopefully tower-caps will grow there. I might use it as a garbage dump and insane dwarves will use it to kill themselves in.

You dangled a preposition, and this topic, while interesting, was bait-and-switch.  I thought it would be about the flawed Dwarven Educational System and the way it brought up dwarves that were unfit for the real world.
