New DF versions, install strategy?
« on: December 26, 2006, 11:58:00 am »

Should I dump the new version into my existing folder overwriting the old?  Make a new folder for each version and copy over my init.txt and save files?

Any good reason to keep the old, or keep them seperate at least?  What tricks do you guys use for updating?

I just wiped the old install and installed the new one over the empty space, although thats not what everyone wants to do. I redid my init settings and decided to dump my saves and start anew, i dumped my previous modding efforts and decided to start anew with that as well. Old saves do work, although ive heard of bugs.

i keep them in folders, seperated by version number.

since this is an alpha-test, i start new worlds and forts for each new version of the game.  this give the best breadth of testing, i think.

if i have a raging boner to continue playing an old fort, i just play it in the old version.  on rare occasions, i'll copy a save directory to a new version, but usually just to test to see if some particular fix affected the fort.  then i'll start over.

I get rid of my old version directories as i stop playing them or decide there isnt a worthwhile reason to return to forts started in those versions.
