Tunnel Tube Cavern Trees Make Tunnels
« on: September 03, 2020, 04:23:10 pm »

It would be interesting if tunnel tube trees could grow through stone (up or down) to some extent, and also have a hollow core that creatures could path through.  Mostly this would just function to connect parts of the cavern together.  But it would get real interesting if a rogue tunnel tube tree grew next to where you sealed off the caverns and managed to breach the fort, allowing FBs etc. inside to rampage.  Either the tunnel tube branches could be treated like stairs, or maybe if a creature used it to path through a wall, that 1 segment that was in the wall deconstructs itself into a tunnel tube log, leaving a gap.

That's interesting. I like the idea of flora and fauna serving strange and alien purposes like that. Though communicating to the player how that specific plant works might take some work, and without that just be frustrating and confusing.

Some mysteries like this are fun to uncover during the course of play.  It could be on the Wiki for those who like to be very prepared for things.  I suppose an announcement once the tunnel tube has breached access into your fort would be helpful.  Then when that FB rampages through, you'll have some idea where it came from.

Might be better to add when there are multi-tile creatures. Seems a bit silly for a whole-ass ancient mysterious subterranean megafauna to get into your fortress by way of the hollow of a tree. As well as rather game-ending. Assorted cavern animals would be more fun.

Possibly. But a map rewrite is coming before multi-tile creatures, so having this suggestion out there for possibilities to consider is well worth it. Won't get another map rewrite for the foreseeable future probably.

Burn the roots, concrete up the holes. It's not any more game ending than digging invaders will be in the next release after Steam. Open up the caverns and chop the damn thing down for a more permanent solution. The more things to make turtling forever less viable the better in my opinion.

This doesn't make turtling less viable, it just adds an extra step that newbies don't know about. :P

Newbies don't tend to know that closing a drawbridge removes all danger from the game either, so probably OK.

It could link up with the old suggestion (not yet anywhere near implementation) that pipes can send liquids through kept-dry walkspaces, or other liquid areas, or be crawlspaces through liquids...

In fact it'd be best that way. If 'pipe tunnels' are being punched through places, organically growing capped pipe systems (until pesky dwarves start harvesting pipe sections, or punching into their conduits unwisely) would be a fairly natural ongoing background process.

Having the branches be pipes would also open up some cool water fountain options depending on which branches you cut and where the water source is.  Forcing creatures to crawl as they path through it, and limiting the creatures who can to a certain size would put some reasonable restrictions on it too.
