What do I do with captured jaguar people
« on: September 02, 2020, 06:02:18 am »

I have passively captured female and Male jaguar men. I cannot train them, but I also cannot release them. I don't want them to wander around, because they scare my camels. I saved the game and put them to guard animal pasture but they were auto focused and killed by other units. I don't want to kill them for roleplay reasons. They did no harm to my fortress, just wandered into my traps. For now I released them to distant pasture. How could animal men be included to population without hacks?

They can't.

The only was to get animal people into the fortress is to recruit them when they petition as they come as visitors from other civs (i.e. not from the wild).
It's possible they can buggedly come from captured sites as well (I've had a "tame" goblin and troll pair come that way).

I kill the animal people caught because there's nothing else you can do, but I really would want to release them and tell them to remove themselves from the fortress' property, but that's not an option. Well, you can keep them in cages until they die of old age as well, but that's not really a better option.

Maybe your camel herd looks and smells like dinner to those jaguar people. But if you design a system to catch-and-release them, you can avoid most lethal conflict with them, and maybe avoid all conflict with them.

They are migratory. If you capture them, hold them for a few months, and then release them, they will leave the map (the common reason migratory creatures become stuck, is because one of their group is trapped).

They are not likely to engage in combat with your civilians, but dogs and active military dwarfs should be kept away from the cage trap areas.

You could create an Animal stockpile, set to only accept caged jaguar folk, and when you notice new captures, choose a release-area somewhere on the surface, away from your fort, and start the process of building the cages for release ('b' 'j', 'x', select a jaguar's cage, link a lever and pull a lever).

While designing this system for catch-and-release of these creatures, keep in mind the risk of better armed and more aggresive invaders; be careful with any new entrances to your fort that they might use.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

Thank you for your replies.  Indeed it seems that after releasing them to a distant pasture, they just took off. Hopefully for long, because I dislike the idea of hurting characters if it does not benefit my people in any way.  Too bad there is no "taming" or rather "civilizing" animal people yet.
