Raid Troubles
« on: August 19, 2020, 02:21:01 pm »

Why don't my dwarves never seem to come back from mission unless I use the fix/retrieve units command in DF hack. I sent my dwarves to raid a necro base, the place I sent them to was a three day travel, I waited for about a month before giving the DFhack command. A couple seconds after I enter the command my dwarves appeared with all the loot the managed to sneak out. When I checked the report it sayed it took them about two weeks to get there and two weeks to get back, it said they returned on the same date as the got back to my fort. But my understanding is that sometimes dwarves wait at the edge of the map just kinda stuck there when returning from a mission (I can remember why) until you use the hack command to retrieve them.

This happens to me more often than not when sending dwarves out (maybe more on raid missions than raze missions?), not to mention all the other weird little things that happen. Why do they take off their armor when coming back? Is it only if you have a better piece that was made in their absence? Why does it always mess up my squads in dwarf therapist? And of course there is the item corruption, but I've found a way around that that has worked well enough for me so far.

Very exited about the military updates we're getting. I can't wait to dispatch my battalions of hill and deep dwarves to crush my enemies. I also hope they put in some formation orders. My dwarves would fare a lot better if the actually, I don't know, formed a line a held it. Ya know, battle strategy 101.

I sound a lot saltier than I am, I love Dwarf Fortress. I just find the military to be one of the most fun and frustrating things in this whole game. I'm very excited to see it be developed more.

If the dorfs sent out or a mission are set to wear their uniform when on duty only they'll remove it when returning because DF, for some unknown reason, reverts them to civilians shortly after they enter the map (I think they return to their military roles after that if they're actually ordered to be on active duty).

I think they are set to have their armor on all the time. Do you know why they don't come back without being hacked? Did they really take that long to get there and back? Did they just happen to come back when I entered the hack command? If they were trapped off to the side of my map tile till I entered the prompt, why didn't my mission report reflect that?

Take examples like Kruggsmash's absentee occupiers & this deserter-dwarf returning to the fortress as a migrant.

For unspecified reasons, if this happens more often than not and can't be attributed to natural casualties whilst travelling (a dwarf COULD just drop dead from old age or a untreated wound infection.), then its a bug report that needs to be filed to toady with evidence if it helps.

I personally have a great suspicion based on krugg's own problem trying to conquer a occupied monastary that they've been recruited by the clergy to become monks, as monastaries seem to suck up absolutely anybody who visits leaving them totally empty.

My dwarves always seem to drop half their armour when they return from raids too. They're set to wear it even when off duty so that isn't the problem, and usually half the pieces they drop are masterworks so they're not trying to upgrade. I've found that reassigning the uniform to the squad usually makes them get dressed properly.

Haha, religion can have that effect on people. They come back eventually, Maybe I was just being impatient, it seems like it might just take a lot longer for them to travel than it says it will on the map.

I figured out the equipment reassigning thing, it is a bit tedious, but it does seem to work. I definitely remember who my hammer dwarves are at this point.

I'm having another problem. So my first mission was a raid and I sent both of my squads, and they both went. The next two missions I sent them on were raze missions. For both of the raze missions only one of my squads would go, and it was the same squad that wouldn't leave both times. The squad members that wouldn't leave had their jobs listed as something along the lines of: can't access site. They would just stand around doing nothing but occasionally going to satisfying needs (saw some purple prayers and socialization). I gave the squad a move order and canceled it, then they went about their normal businesses and were removed from the mission.

All my nobles positions are filled, and there is a noble leading every squad. I currently have my pop cap at 105, could that be part of the issue? Can I only send out one squad to raze a site if my pop cap is that low? My militia commander is in the squad that wont leave, does that have something to do with it? I am pretty sure I've sent my militia commanders out plenty of times in other forts. So strange, has anyone else experienced this? This is the first time I've had this problem, and the first time I've played with a custom pop cap, so I'm a bit suspicious it has something to do with that.

It doesn't have anything to do with the pop cap, but I can't say anything beyond that.

Thanks, that's good to know. A relief too, really digging having this pop cap. Back to the drawing board. I have a couple ideas I can try.
