Smashed Open Bones?

I know that severed tendons are permanently debilitating, but what about smashed open bones?

Bones will eventually heal, but some fractures are overlapping and need to be settled and kept in traction at a traction bench.

If in fort mode, the unit in question will require medical care.

If in adventure mode you can rest for a few days (sometimes only one) and it'll heal. Not very immersive, but that's how it has to be since healthcare hasn't been implemented for adventurers yet.

It is fort mode, he left the hospital after his initial treatment. His health menu says that there are no treatment scheduled. Do I just have to wait and eventually he'll go to the hospital to have it set again? I tend to only use splints, do I need a cast for a break that bad? He's a legendary leather worker and one of my void dwarves. Poor little bastard has no family, we're all he's got. It just feel so wrong to exile a void dwarf, even if it is for their own good. I'll let him wonder around telling poetry till he heals. I think playing with a lower population cap is making me soft(er).

Me being curious... what bones were smashed open? There might be no following treatment scheduled because the next step is "the body has to heal"... and if there is a new health issue (infection, dizziness, and passing out), they will end up in the hospital again.

In real-life, splints are used until muscle-swelling reduces, and then replaced with a cast (because a cast holds everything in position better), but I don't know how DF handles it. I am fairly sure that DF prefers to use casts because in a fort with 10 or more splints available and gypsum powder being produced, they used powder faster than I expected, but am not sure if it assists healing in any way.

But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

Splints and casts do the exact same thing, and casts are preferred over splints by the doctors. I don't know if one is more effective than the other or if they are literally the same effectwise.

Where was your dwarf injured? Did you check his inventory to see if he already has a splint or a cast somewhere?

Also, I'm assuming you have a hospital zone set and stocked with splints/casts.

Yeah I have a hospital zone, doctors and all that stuff. It was his right arm and left hand. I just had to be patient, his bones healed up a bit in his splints and he can drink with a cup again. Thanks though. That dwarf has funny luck, he got caught outside by a werebeast just after recovering enough to haul things. Managed to dodge the beasts attacks over 10 times, not a scratch on him. He just kept dodging till my military showed up. Pretty impressive.
