Dwarves getting outside by the ceiling?
« on: July 26, 2020, 03:35:37 am »

My fortress is under siege. After some battle at the entrance gate, someone finally pulled the lever closing the bridge,  I thought everyone was inside except a few human visiting artist, so I assumed the two goblins remaining outside would not be able to harm any of my dwarves. They started to move towards an area located above my fortress entrance, where I have fishery and butchery, some refuse stockpiles...

Then I saw messages relating to tasks interrupted by goblins, and then discovered that there was some actual fight going on above ground, not only with the human artists, but also with some dwarves. I first thought that the dwarves outside were ones that initially hadn't managed to enter before the bridge closed, without me noticing. But new ones seem to drop into the fight!

The goblins are just above a zone with some workshops and a tavern, and there appears to be a hole on the ceiling (due to trees having being chopped above ground and mined below). This explains why some dwarves were interrupted in their activities, because they can see what's happening through the ceiling. Are they also able to jump through it and try to (somewhat suicidally) rescue their comrades?

Cacame channels aquifers into submission by staring at them. Cacame is so badass, kobolds give him their children to leave them alone. If Hidden Fun Stuff digs too far down, they hit Cacame. Cacame once took a Tantrum Spiral and impaled four enemies on it.

There are basically two forms of pathing: peaceful and combat. While combat pathing, dwarves will climb, jump, and dodge to get to or away from an enemy. So, yeah, likely they're doing that up the hole to get to the goblins.

Not much to stop it at this point beyond waiting it out. Burrows might help prevent some of this behavior in the future.

I had an "Inside" burrow, but after closing the gate, I thought it was safe to deactivate the civilian alert restraining the dwarves to "Inside". I finally killed those two remaining goblins, but a Cyclop arrived before anyone had time to rest! Not sure this fortress will last very long...

Building a wall directly below the hole should seal it, if it's only 1 z level. It'll be tough, since dwarves are likely to stop what they are doing to join or flee the fray, though.

Good luck!

Trees limbs and wall collapsing is driving me nuts in my current fortress, aswell. Dwarfs chase kea onto broken ledges and cannot get back. I think I am going to try "dirt roading" an outside loop, where a moat would go, to keep my walls from crumbling with ea new tree, until I build a pile of clay bricks. I guess dirt roads hold down trees. *shrug*

Paved roads are better than dirt roads. Stockpiles will also prevent saplings from growing. The stockpile doesn't need to store anything; it just needs to be designated.

I usually embark with deep soil for this reason. I'lll dig down two or three layers first to avoid the log problem all together.
