Animals in trees
« on: July 14, 2020, 05:50:22 am »

Hi There,
I am recently returned after a long absence. I never did get past Newbie. I am using V 0.43.05 because that is what I had left over from last time around.

So, I have some livestock up trees. How to get them out? (How the hell did a horse get up there, and how do I get the bones down?)
thanks

Scared creatures can climb trees. I think that old version has the bug that doesn't let them climb down (the current implementation doesn't seem to work perfectly either, though). There are two ways to get things down from threes:
- Cut the tree down. The critter may get injured through the process, though, but it's the fastest.
- Build stairs (don't forget the upper level: just stairs up are useless).
- Use DFHack's teleport script to teleport the creature to a location a little bit to the side to let them fall to the ground. That rarely or never results in serious injuries. For items you'd need to hack the position of the item using gui/gm-editor, but that might be too difficult if you haven't use the tool before.

If you build stairs up into the trees, watch out for a bug. The game will let you designate a staircase up into twigs, but it will never complete the job. The dwarf who takes it will pick up the building item and then freeze in place until the job is cancelled.
