equipping squad issue
« on: July 12, 2020, 11:44:41 am »

I just made a bunch of full sets of steel armor for my squad and I'm equipping them individually assigning specific pieces to them. I have it set to wear over civilian clothing and exact matches but so far every one of them is leaving their gauntlets and boots behind. Anyone know what might be a common cause of that? Could it be the 'wear over civilian clothing' thing?

Wiki says this "Also, if you do not tell dwarves to replace clothing with a uniform, they will wear it alongside the uniform and possibly come into conflict with layering and sizes/permits, making them unable to wear assigned items. Particularly, caps conflict with helms (both are shaped items), and shoes are too large to fit inside boots."

It applies to mittens and gauntlets also.

I currently use Replace for military that expects to see action (emergency response dwarfs), and use Over Clothing for the civilian militia.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

I thought that might be it. I just don't want them leaving their clothes all over the place.

Dwarves should tend to take owned clothes back to their bedrooms.
For cleaning up un-owned clothes, I recommend using a setup something like this:

The low and high quality stockpiles can be combined together into a single all-quality stockpile if you don't want to waste newly produced clothing. I still see the odd sock lying around, but they usually get cleared up pretty quickly.

The LNP has some sort of default DFHack setting that helps a lot with this. I think it periodically unforbids and dumps old clothes left lying around.

I try to get rid of clothing as much as possible. It wears out much too quickly for my taste, and there's no efficient way to get rid of the old unwanted stuff. Maybe a stockpile setting for worn items would help.

I use overclothing and exact on every squad. But I leave the loose option in the uniform, for example: Metal Footwear, instead of Steel Low Boots. I melt down all the rest.

Ive also started using a limbo uniform. If he's deploying with a lack of coverage. I use an Empty uniform and toggle squads according to their priorities.

I've yet to get this missing boot bug, myself. I do get dorfs showing up in goblinite, and their loinclothes, socks, etc. I dont mind them using goblin underclothing.
