Could have. Wasn't. Was 20 years ago. Different game. Code doesn't magically rewrite itself.

That it the site-code that needs rewriting is my point.

Take a listen to this interview with Toady where he explains the upcoming changes and the plans for beyond Steam.
Ancient site code is broken, needs rewriting. Hence he's planning on rewriting it (once this damn Steam stuff is out of the way).

Yes and one of the ways it needs to be rewritten is in order to integrate security zones into it, so we cannot just waltz into a prison or a stockpile of valuable items.
