There are things I could easily do in Classic (v0.47) that I can't in this version anymore, such as changing the orientation where stairs can lead to, for instance transforming an existing Up/Down staircase to a Up staircase, to block entry from the lower level, without having to dig or build from any other direction other than from the Z-layer above.

Say I'm digging straight down through multiple Z-levels that eventually leads to the ceiling of an underground cave, and the last Up/Down staircase I dig exposes that cave. It used to be easy to shut the cave by changing the last staircase to an ''Up'' only, but there's no easy way to do that anymore, since building stairs on top of existing stairs that were dug will not change their orientation.

The current system seems to allow building a floor to reset a tile (building a floor where a stair was), but that would make the Dwarf be stuck on the Z-layer where the floor is, unable to climb back up due to how it's no longer a stair there but a floor.

There doesn't need to be a return to that nonsense, there needs to be a fix of the current system where you can just build stairs automatically.

if it's automatic, what do you do if you don't want them to connect?

I will remain neutral on the thread topic -

Regarding your problems with breaching caverns, I have a quick solution.

Use 1x2 or 2x2 stairs from now on.

When breaching open spaces, down stair tiles will be generated. Simply dig out one of the tiles via channeling, replacing it with a constructed upward staircase. This will seal the bottom of the tile. Repeat this process with the other tile, or in case of a 2x2 the remaining three tiles.

This change represents a loss of dwarven construction capability, which is ironic considering it was updated to this state. This is where the frustration lies.. I cannot help you there.

I do like the new system, but it's not yet perfect, since it goes against being able to modify single staircase columns like we used to. When digging straight down, you end up with

Down
Up/Down
Up/Down
Up/Down
Up/Down
Up

But then you won't be able to change the column to the following example anymore without being forced to work sideways:

Down
Up/Down
Up/Down
Up

Up/Down
Up/Down
Up

Sure working with 1x2 and 2x2 staircases can help, but when trying to convert them to 1x1, it becomes all too tedious. They just need re-add the ability for a stair's orientation to be modifiable from a Dwarf being 1 Z-level above or below it.

All they need to do is make the stair tile visual-only. The top of the stair always looks like a down stair, the bottom of the stair always looks like an up stair, anything in the middle is up/down. When you build an addition, it converts automatically.

I don't know why eerr would not want them to connect. Why would you build a stair if it doesn't connect?

That way we can finally be rid of the stairs that require a long explanation with pictures to explain.

It's for when I dig too deep and then change my mind by wanting an easy way to shorten the span of how deep the stairs go, especially if the bottom one initially leads to an area I no longer want access to, like an open cave where flying monsters can reach me from below.

You can simply install a hatch cover on the stair, it can be locked and will be indestructible from below.

The return of that functionality as a sub-button for the stair painter would be nice. A workaround for now would be to channel the lower stairs, build a floor, then build an upstair on that floor.
