Minecarts as transport
« on: July 16, 2020, 06:30:26 pm »

See title. Dwarves can already ride minecarts, but it's not really an effective way of getting a dwarf from point A to point B just as a regular transport method. I think it'd be interesting to see minecarts usable like that: have an additional condition where the "when 50% full, always, when full of items, etc..." options in a hauling route are, a condition that would read something like "Ride north immediately, as transport." The choice to ride or not to ride for a dwarf would be pretty simple at first and should still work with existing pathing: if they encounter a route stop set to "as transport" when looking for paths, they look down it at a much lower cost than usual, up until the cart would stop. Doing that would probably require sending a phantom minecart down the path since there would otherwise be too many conditions of how a cart could stop. The phantom minecart stuff could possibly just be entirely skipped in terms of phantom-activating pressure plates: dwarves already don't take optimal paths to account for future activation, so it'd be in line with current mechanics.

Not something I could see getting seriously added, but I thought it sounded cool enough to make note of.

The hauling Stop could have a passenger wait option. If wait time for cart>ridetime, skip cart and walk on. If...<ridetime, load and ride. To prevent a bottleneck, provide twoway travel on a single track. Create a geotrain, or geocart, for mapping and surveying. With its rider set to find metal veins, magma or specials.

I think those things would've already been found by the miners (unless you're actually expecting the "geocart" to phase through solid matter...).

Anyways, I'd like to see the addition of a specialty cart just for transportation.  something that can seat multiple dwarves.

Dwarf Coaster Tycoon? Yes please.

Load person and push could be... Interesting. Could be used for recovering injured dwarves from violent areas, or more likely firing children at goblins.

I was thinking a geographer like in Settlers 2, but instead of dropping a survey flag, he rides his geocart, minecart, about cave rails, no routes needed and a circle of 5-10 radius, of darkened map blocks, surroundings him are temp revealed for a season. For better gem pillar smoothing and engraving and room designing. I do not always mine my natural gem clumps.

maybe as part of the magic arc; or as some kind of Dwarven technology involving a complicated clockwork percussion instrument... there should be a lot of guesswork involved still though,

Oh! I cannot remember the book title. But it had deep dwarfs. And after a bit of religious zeal-like study, say.. a deep dwarf cleric. Well he would gain passrock. Sound like bad constipation. But PASSWALL is the ability to swim through solid stone. It may have been a Discworld, Captain of the Watch, book series. A passwalling cleric could haul any object, including a living being, aslong as he was fit enough.

Could maybe afix this type of skillset onto a minecart, for almost guaranteed safe outside to inside, hauling. Put a trackstop up against stone wall, toggle on "swim into stone" East. Come out anywhere, aslong as it was connected by unrevealed bedrock.

what about a labor conductor and being able to link multiple cart together to make train. that way you would have some one there and move a lot of dwarves at the same time useful for getting dwarves back to home-base and back to the site quickly. and maybe a engine type cart that used coke or charcoal.

I could really enjoy a train of minecarts. Especially if it heralded in subtetanean trading. Always questioned my immersion as a dwarf, to have my civ to civ trade be topside, and performed over a cart, and not a minecart or chain of minecarts.

The railroad tycoon games have some very complex intricacies in signaling and track switching, especially roundtables and twoway track layouts, which could be very attractive to us in df.

Dwarf minecart trains should be haulable by donkeys and llamas

Quote from: Toady, DF Talk #23
I heard people tried to do [a minecart shotgun] with dwarves once, I don't know if it works. Like, put a bunch of dwarves in a minecart and bounce them and shoot them at somebody.
