Selling food outside of barrels?
« on: May 30, 2020, 04:32:15 am »

I have a few prepared food stacks that are too large to fit into a barrel.

Can I trade them away to a caravan? All I can find in the item list for trading is 'barrels'.

Is it possible to split them, perhaps?

You can. Search ' roast' , 'stew'  and ' biscuit'.
Sorting by value instead of distance will usually put your prepared meals right on top of the trade list.
Every food item can be sold outside of barrels, except liquids and glob (tallow).
In my forts, I never use barrels for anything but liquids and excess tallow, the rest goes into QST.
Similarily, I never use bins. At all.

That search should find it, but if you want to move it to the top of the sort-by-distance list, you can use linked stockpiles to move it somewhere else (like a small stockpile near the depot). Make a small stockpile near the depot, set it to "take from links only", "no barrels", "cooked meals only", and "take from the barrelled stockpile", then they will move it.

Note that will work well for your case, since a take from order will not take the prepared food from the barrels, it will only take those foods you mentioned didn't fit in a barrel.
'Take from stockpile' orders will never take items out of barrels. It will move barrels full of goods though, so indeed make sure the receiving stockpile does not accept barrels.

Obvious but bears reminding.  For the split, remember that you want to split during the sell.  Not sell all and buy parts back.      For some reason I wasn't thinking during my last split a few weeks ago and accidentally sold the entire stack and had to scrounge to rebuy it, since it contained some purchased fish ingredients that my dwarves had preferences for.

Bins are evil. I love automatic QS. However with prepared food I noticed vermin spawning frequently over it. Despite cats. So, I keep it in barrels. I tend to strip the big stacks to 60 in trade with merchant. I use prepared food stockpile like a barrier to stop Dwarves from eating ingredients. I removed bins only from cooking ingredients, so same type of food is not used in cooking all over again.

I've used QST for prepared food for ages and have never noticed any decay from vermin. Then again, given the sheer quantity of prepared meals I produce, I would probably not notice if a stack was eaten by vermin.

Oh wait, you probably are more concerned about bad thoughts from being accosted by terrible vermin than losing food?Never had any serious issue with that either, or at least the vermin on a prepared food stockpile is insignificant compared to the worms and snails in a chicken farm.
