unnamed wound <solved>
« on: May 20, 2020, 06:38:53 pm »

Hi,
So, I got my first casulty in a new fort. Dulcim's death took me by complete surprise. Suffocation death, while holding a cup, in the tavern. Hmpf. Have a justice system, but no entryies yet. Hmpf. Deathcause - suffocation. no brainer, but how? No water to drown in, anywhere near his death tile. There are socializing dorfs nearbye. Looked closer, but cannot confirm if he was a visitor or civ. Letting it go, not rage quiting.

Second tavern patron is now dying. Blinking red cross. Caught this fella before he died. Looking at wounds, perforated right lung. Breathing problems. uck oh! He is in tavern, too. Gonna cheat, its my Chief Medical noble, has the only diagnosis of a 60ish dorf pop, brand spanking fort. going on yr 2. Pull up gui/gm-unit, delete his lung wound. observe... it comes back. multicmd fullheal;removestress;fillneeds
it comes back. multicmd heal again. it comes back, use gui/gm-unit there is bad lung again.. remove it, IT COMES BACK. red cross on him... wtf quit the fort, its got 2 nice wells and a growing bunkroom, come here to seek advice. Please.

Try add/rem syndrome, but its not working, stack overflow from not targeting right entity. Got dorf targeted, so dunno. Thanks. Help me save the chief medic.

Alcohol poisoning.
Tends to effect visitors more. Try to keep your tavern busy or your tavern keeper busy with other jobs. Stops him focussing on one dwarf with intentions to kill.

Having no tavern keeper works too (mostly). But where's the fun in that? Should only kill a couple of folk a year. Multiple tavern keepers is not a good idea at present time.

Alcohol poisoning. Interesting. Thank you. Ya, I got 3 taverns keepers in 2 taverns, this sudden dying is in the tavern for everyone. And I do have the potent booze, its a Joyous(savage good) embark. Good zones have the powerful drink. Ill autodump it in a pile behind a locked door.

You can sometimes catch it in time if you spot someone passed out in the tavern. Check their personality, if they have no self-control, they're a potential fatality.

Goblins tend to be the worst. Generally no self-control and no oversized dwarven liver to help keep themselves alive.

Would reducing the number of cups that is assigned to an inn help to prevent these deaths?

That's a method recommended. Another one is to have the booze stockpile far away from the tavern, and a third one is to adjust the number of poisoners allocated to the tavern (note that "performers" serve as much as tavern keepers, and tavern keepers perform as little as performers do) to a suitable ratio to the number of patrons. Personally I don't assign personnel to my taverns, so I have no personal experience with the (very reasonable) recommendations.

I cannot move booze stock away from tavern. Three stills and kitchens operating in the zone. Its production is daisy chained to farming and pressing. And public house, or tavern has gotta be near cavern break, to keep monster slayers, well, doing something.

Can I put booze in a minecart? If I had the extra population I could rail it unnecessarily to and from, to keep them from dispensing too much. May just free up some barrels, too. Minecart fixes are always soooooooo slow.

Ill burrow CMD, away from booze, while cheating to keep him alive. Ill prolly temp rage quit, if he dies. Worldgen and legends play right now is not so sucky. All that effort racing around, in pauseplay, scumsaving, in first 2 yr to avoid a stress cascade to make the lil pricks happy, and they go and kill themselves 'too' happy. Ugg.

TY for advice and help, at least its not a bug. Felt like one, however.

Update. Better idea. Using /brainwash and attribute edit, in gm-unit in dfhack, so nobles have some willpower. I can handle the insignificant dorf death, but not a noble, ive been smoozing for seasons.

I think I've heard of DFHack scripts to heal injuries, but you'll have to look for such a script yourself: I don't have a better idea than you what it might be called.

Booze in minecarts is bugged. Once the barrel is dumped, a dorf (eventually) picks it up and carries it back to the stockpile feeding the minecart, because the barrel is still marked a being "owned" by that stockpile. It's been said that unloading minecarts manually causes the barrels to be assigned to the destination stockpiles correctly, although I haven't tried that.

Full-heal will keep a winded creature alive for a few ticks.
However it will not remove any syndromes. So the creature stays intoxicated and needs "full-heal" many times before the syndrome wears off. I don't think I ever had the patience.
I guess removing a syndrome is much harder. No curse for lycotrophy either.

Worst case you could try and make a necromancer in adventure mode and raise the death intoxicated creature as an intelligent undead. This might only works in regions that freeze in winter and thaw in summer as you need a non-combat way to repeatedly kill undead until you are satisfied with his powers.

Saved medic. His immoderation was way above norm. gui/gm-unit showed it at 89, ideal is 25, norm 50.  I meticulously nerfed each dwarfs personality stats, with dfhack's /brainwash ideal. Do not plan to stay on tavern zone, watching for this to happen, 24/7.

Oddly, this has undone my stress 0.0.0 raw tweak, now the dorfs in this Joyous fortress specifically built against stress cascades, all have 25 stress and 25 immoderation, instead of 0 stress and random immod. CMD that was saved has a max now in will. also, but it was immod that saved him. Used heal cheat about 20x, before he put wood cup down.

I left performers go. 1 barkeep/tavern, I like the idea of visitors dying of consumption.

You dont think, its got anything to do with these, low quality feather tree cups, do you? It only happens in bar with 2 barkeeps. Happened again with another dorf, 25 immoderation, after /brainwash ideal. Lowered it to 0, and he dropped feather tree cup in pool of vomit, and lived.

@PL, Thank you. Saved me the research. I was hoping minecart would take food like bars.

@Urist, Thank you. I mainly stick to Legends and Fortress play. Never really enjoyed rogues in fantasy, except nethack. Im an old man, so that one that has autoadventure, the game literally plays itself, until combat occurs, then pauses. That feature helps save my arthritis. dfhacks script add syndrome, advertises it removes them, too. Is this a deadstick in this version of dfhack? All it gave me was an error.

While dorf was drinking himself to death, I had a swarm of Elkbirds visit the hospital, this further baffled me, because I thought he was unable to get a bed there.

DF goes to great length to post alert msgs about the stress decline into melancholy, but it does nothing whatsoever to warn of booze poisoning, except a death msg that I cheated to investigare with /deathcause. In RL the barkeep would start watering the drinks. Take dorfs minecart keys, and call for a hairy uber mule to drag the drunk home by his low boot for a plump helmet.

A lot of dust on version 47.04, but its kinda fun trying to make it all work.

Dwarf Fortress will still be Dwarf Fortress even after graphics a new UI and some bug fixes. If you don't like it now, you almost certainly still won't then.

Not sure what the comment about DLC means? Free is free and 30-40 year development plan isn't changing. Don't like the tileset and music, no need to buy on Steam.

@Shonai, took it off post. Thanks for clarifying things, again. You know last fort, I named my exp leader nickname, Shonai. Then mtnhome fell, and in yr 2 or three, Shonai became king. Was fun making all that stuff for a king.
