Tired vampires. How do they work?

I have two vampires trapped in my fort. Both of them are constantly tired (not drowsy). Why? One of them managed to escape once and drank the blood of two dwarves, and yet he was just as tired as before. I'm trying to make them soldiers but they never train, ever. How do I get them to not be tired?
