Religious Texts and Artifacts
« on: May 04, 2018, 04:05:50 pm »

When Toady gets around to fleshing out religion, he should include a system of religious texts and artifacts.

Religious artifacts wouldn't be created by strange moods, but rather by events, e.g. the tooth of a saint, the Ark of the Covenant, a piece of the true cross, or the Holy Grail.

Other religious artifacts would be created by a strange mood or other established process, but still considered holy. The Sefer Torah in a synagogue is handled with great reverence, as are icons in in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

The bottom tier would be the ordinary religious items: Texts would include hymnals, prayer books, and works of theology. Other items might include amulets, figurines, and other items believed to bring good luck or show devotion.

These are just examples that I can think of offhand. It might help Toady if we collected fun ideas for types of religious texts and objects from a variety of world religions.

Religious artifacts were added in 44.01. Usually made of the body parts of dead priests and placed in their temples.

But we don't have religious artifacts with a larger significance on the society.

In my food thread, I was told it was acceptable to necro an old topic if you want to expand on a suggestion. I was thinking it would be cool if, when a temple to a certain god becomes big enough in your temple, they will collect various texts about that god that have been written throughout history and canonize them together to make a bible. Basically, you would put a bookcase in your temple and pilgrims can donate appropriate books if they have them. When you've collected enough books and your temple has enough worshipers a bible is created in the following way:
Your temple petitions for you to build a library and link it to them (or link and existing library to them). Then a scholar combines all the chosen religious books into one big codex.

SOme universes would have Divine Revelation as a source, basically deities doling out texts (like with the slabs of necromancy). Relics might also be created by deities; in some cases, more dishonests prophets would claim an item was created by a deity.
