What to do with masterpieces ?
« on: March 22, 2020, 03:13:19 pm »

Were these items (masterpieces) made by legendary skilled dwarfs ?
What is the benefit to have masterpiece made item quality.?

I think there about 18 legendary skilled dwarfs with this status and 67 losers :)-(according to DF therapist)
Interesting to know what is the distribution of the legendary dwarfs

All  squadmembers are legendary , but not in martial art ?
Why became they legendary ?

The chance of crafting a masterpiece scales with the dwarf's relevant crafting skill. Masterpieces are higher in value and better in combat than lower quality items. Destruction of a masterwork item triggers a bad thought for its creator.

Check the dwarf's skills to determine why they're legendary. Usually it's due to a legendary social skill.

Also note that dorfs tend to get good thoughts from admiring (and owning) high quality items, so masterworks furniture is good for nobles (where they demand rooms of different minimum values), as well as in public areas, such as e.g. chairs and tables in the tavern.
I gradually replace the initial items with masterworks items and sell the old stuff.

Legendary is simply the highest titled skill level. There are actually 15 (iirc) levels of post-legendary experience skills, but the name is the same for all of them.

Any dwarf can become legendary, assuming they are given enough time to practice a skill.

Most military dwarfs gain legendary in one of the other skills like observation or fighting before they gain legendary in their main weapon skill. I imagine this is due to the balance between sparring and observing demonstrations, as decided by the AI.

Almost all your dwarves have history from before they joined the fortress. Later check them in Legends Mode. They gain skills there, like combat skills from all the battles they've been in.

The current version (47.x) seems to have more dwarves arriving with legendary skills than previously (up to 44.x). Not sure if that's a bug somewhere, or if it's just started giving them realistic skills in worldgen compared with in-game skill increases (30 years working as a carpenter, they arrive as "dabbling carpenter" a year later they're legendary).

Probably slightly buggy, I have a legendary potter immigrant who's never worked in pottery (or made an artifact) according to their history.

That's one application for the masterworks items, interesting.
Collect the masterpieces together at one stockpile, that could give a better oversight/handling in how
to use them further in the fortress ?
Nobles  and public areas i will look there

The relation between skill level and item quality is not yet clear yet for me.
It are the legendary skilled dwarves who are making master pieces, no one else do if they are not a legendary skilled dwarf, right?

Is this a structural issue? or a one time event.
What to conclude from this?
It's a mess or not ?

Just to make sure we're on the same page -- my masterworks, do you mean items like ☼this☼, or artifacts that the dwarf makes after getting an !, claiming a workshop, and creating something of their own?

Having a lot of masterwork stuff is nice, but note that almost all dwarves want to do some sort of crafting occasionally. It's easy to just let your one legendary bone carver make a lot of money for your fort. But make sure to let others do it too.

Doing nothing they don't like, right?, especially when there are not hauling jobs set (maybe let the dwarfs hauling free dwarfs let 3 hauling jobs do: food , refuse and burial )
Crafting in general what can that be as jobs?

Anything that produces a product, I think. Masonry, craftsdwarfship, brewing. But not things like hauling/mining.
