About the new graphics update
« on: March 14, 2020, 02:33:20 am »

Hi,
This question may already been asked and answered somewhere but for the life of me I kind find it.

What exactly does graphical update bring to the table that the mods don't, as in what's the difference between the upcoming graphic pack and the old graphical mods ?

Again, sorry if this is an obvious and/or already answered question.

It seems to be able to do everything TWBT can do at the moment but not crash when you try to play Adventurer. That's a good start.

I'll let others add the features above what mods can manage right now.

Firstly: Graphics in (commercial) vanilla DF...

Apart from that, things are vague as nothing is nailed down until it works. Other things (sort of) known:
- Tile sets are going to be separated out from the saves, which presumably means you can share a save and use different tile sets (rather important if donation based DF investigators are going to try to fault find commercial saves, plus for shared fortresses, of course).
- 32*32 tiles for Commercial
- Different grid sizes, which means:
  - Text can be a different size from the map
  - World map (presumably pre embark, civ screen, and adventure travel) can use 16*16 tiles to allow more to be displayed
  - Mouse over tooltips are intended to be able to be smaller than regular text (if I understand it correctly)
- As Shonai_Dweller said, the target seems to be TwbT+, minus the crashes
- Procedural creature graphics generated from parts (don't know TwbT enough to tell what's in it and what's not)
- Discussed: Clothing and equipment indicated on the sprite, possibly beard/hair, but that's far from settled.
- Other things they won't mention until they're reasonably sure it will work.

I thought it was mentioned at some point about the world map being able to use different tiles to the embark map rather being limited to the linked characters as it is now.

Oh and in case it's not clear, this development arc isn't just a "graphical update". There are graphics yes, plus a UI revamp (keys which make sense, mouse if you want to use it, maybe even a standardized system for drawing rectangles), a tutorial (mentioned again in the interview a couple of days ago) a general brush-up of annoying bugs and other weirdness that might put off new people.

It'll still be Dwarf Fortress, so still only 47% complete (no matter what Steam would like to tell you) so obviously some eccentricity will remain. And there won't be any big changes like replacing workshops with zones (something due to happen later). And Toady reiterated his opposition in the interview to making a spreadsheet management game, so something like Therapist probably won't be appearing, but there may be some automation of some kind added.

Will the new graphics give the player the option of square or round corners on walls (both constructed and mined/smoothed) in the same tileset?

If unknown, maybe someone involved in the work could suggest it to Toady.  I think this would be a wonderful addition for aesthetic reasons!

This is the official thread for the Steam/Itch tileset. You can ask the artists there what they've been thinking about.
