Too many migratory legendary poets?
« on: February 27, 2020, 08:06:29 pm »

Every migrant wave seems to have at least one legendary poet, sometimes two. Fort has thirty dwarves now and I have three legendary poets. Should they be this common?

Could be something from world gen and your civ. Perhaps your dwarves enjoy and value poetry a lot. Or it's just RNG messing with you.

Legendary migrants of all types seem to be common in this version. Seems to be a result of having more actual historical figures in migrant waves than dorfs raised from pop numbers compared with previous versions.

I mean, considering most have them have been poets for decades before they turn up at your fortress it only makes sense they'd be legendary considering how quickly one can become legendary while living in a player fortress.

Consistent, if not very balanced.

I get a surprising amount of Legendary insert social skill migrants too.

I've got a 73 dwarf fort with four legendary musicians, and three that are all legendary speaker and poet.

The problem stems from legendary being too easy to get. The exp curve needs to become much steeper at the higher skill levels for all professions, and legendaries should be rare instead of "spam these wooden crafts for two years".

You get something other than mediocre cloth dyers or soapmakers?

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the reason yours are legendary is that every skill level has an equal chance of being generated, and there are 5 (I think) levels of legendary.

Pretty sure you're wrong on that one; I believe that higher skill levels tend to denote older and safer worlds, where student-teacher relationships have happened for generations. Novice skills seem far more likely than legendary skills too; seems I get a lot less than 1/15 (or 5/20, which seems a lot less likely) skills with legendary; that would mean more than 1/15 dwarves in any fort would be legendary since most dwarves have multiple skills.

Can't just be pure random; it at least has to be weighted somehow.

If the legendary skill level breaks your immersion, just generate a younger world. The skill level of any given historical figure is tied to how much time they're been alive. So if you are playing in a 150+ world, the dwarves have a large opportunity to train up social skills. Poetry is easy, all they need is to be hanging out at a a tavern (I presume, I haven't confirmed how simulationist the skill gain is.)

As Orkel stated, the skill gain should be balanced according to our expectations of what 'legendary' means - worthy of telling stories about, rare and almost impossible to attain.

You should know that Legendary actually encompasses something like 15 different skill levels, all the way from Legendary +1 to Legendary +15 (IIRC). So the poetry can always get better :D

Legendary just means "skilled" as most dwarfs in player fortress can reach legendary in a few years.
